I used Merguirs (sp?) 'Quick detailer' to clean it up and this was the result! I knew it would really come out nice with very little effort.

I'm wondering what I should do next? Wax it or should I wash the whole truck and claybar it? (I don't want to rub off any of the dove blue paint though).

It has great patina all over it. All OG, not messed with at all.

Patina is great, but strong OG paint like that is fucking sick! Do the whole thing!

Once you've cleaned up the whole truck I'd suggest waxing it if you live somewhere that has a lot of rain. If it's hot most of the time then leave it.

damn, that looks good.

Looks great!!! how long did that take to do? Every so often I've been cleanning up the 58 DD which had some seriously chaulky paint on it... Used the clay bar which did help a bunch. Think I'll try the Meguires stuff you mentioned.
I had used their 'polishing wax' on that bus. It works good too..

If I were you I would clean up the rest of the truck 'cause that door is a sure indication that the rest of the paint will buff out fine. But then you haev to decide what to do with the rusted areas where there is no paint. I would have the existing paint color matched and spot in those areas where there is no paint. A good mixer should be abel to match it dead on so you can't even tell. Otherwise, you will constantly be dealing with rust coming back and it will look ratty.

Hey, there's an idea. I think I will start a whole new movement involving rusty, beat up Volkswagens. Then everyone will post numerous threads in the
rants as to how much they hate me, all the while I sit back and laugh. :D J/K[/b]

Good score !!!
Did you find that Gem "locally"?
EDIT Yeah, obviously, I just spotted the Stettler Motors
ssticker VERY COOL!!
So now you have a split and a split?

I washed my door with water only, got a bunch of chalky paint on the rag.
Then I hand rubbed it with Turtle Wax.

I was surprised at the result!

It's nice to be able to do that with the OG paint.

nice job guys. nothing like a little elbow grease!

eh0s Sun Oct 16, 2005 1:00 pm

Well, I was very lucky, I knew it would 'clean' up very easily. That door took about 2 minutes of work (no heaving rubbing etc). The 'quick detailer' IS very quick!

I will do the whole truck, get the mechanicals done then I will probably do the rusty bits and have them colour matched (last step).

Riff Raff: Yup, picked it up close to Calgs (your neck of the woods). I saw your 15 window, NICE find! :)

I have been looking for that stuff for a while. Where do you get it? Do you have to have a prescribtion?

You might want to try a cleaner wax that has SLIGHT abrasive qualities to it to remove some of the ground in dirt. If that isn't good enough for you, use 3M liquid rubbing compound by hand. Glasurit paint is very tough and can handle a harsher cleaning regimine.

I'm worried about taking off any paint with rubbing compounds. But I will try it in a smaller area and see what happens, otherwise, I will use the Merguirs and some wax on top (but that takes off paint too sometimes!)

The quick detailer is just a light detergent with some sort of surfactants.
Its designed to be used between waxings to clean and recoat the wax with a bit of surfactant to get the wax beading water again.
It really isn't responsible for the nice look of that door, the rag and your hard work did the job. It only acted as a lubricant.

You would need a more abrasive cleaner to bring more shine out of the paint.
I like the Mcguiar's "Three Step" products. Step One is the most abrasive, Step Two is less abrasive, and Step Three is least abrasive. Designed to be used with an electric buffer with a polishing bonnet. By the time you get to Step Three, you would be amazed.

Did you take the picture right after applying it.. that stuff drys out after a few minutes.. try mop and glo if you want a lasting shine.. I prefer a faded look..

eh0s Sun Oct 16, 2005 11:29 pm

The door is still like that (I used some 'spray wax'). I like the faded look too so the rest of the SC will look like that semi-cleaned up but not sparkley :)

I'll post pics of the rest tomorrow.

Came up alright.

Put some Merguirs NXT wax on it, the stuff is fantastic.

if you want shine rubbing is a good thing, this bus hadn't been waxed in 20 years or more.

i used 3m finesse-it 2 (p/n 05928). takes lots of elbow grease but it's gentle on the paint. you're going to get color on the rag no matter what you do when you're working with something so heavily oxidized.
