hey folks,
dad just got accepted at Lockheed in Fallon Nevada, and he really wants the job. but he needs to know a few things before he decides on takin it or not,
first off,
we were told there was a Luchemia (sp?) outbreak there a few years ago, is this true?? if so, how bad was it? and has there been any recent cases??
second, how much are we looking to pay for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house??
third, what is the cost of living out there?
and a question for me, how is the VW scene?? 8)
oh, and is it all deserty or all cold and mountain like??? man, i really dig the desert!!!
any help would greatly be appreciated as i would really love to move back out west and finally get the heck out of the south!!!! |

I've been through Fallon a few times, and it's a little place. Tiny little. It isn't dessert like southern Nevada. It's up there closer to Reno. If it has a v.w. scene it would shock the bejesus out of me. You could ride a bike from one end of town to the other in about 3 minutes. Winter time is cold because of the wind up there. There's plenty of mountains and water nearby. I don't know about you but I'd like it a hell of a lot better than ANYwhere in the south, except for Austin. Austin is cool. Can't tell ya anything about the leukemia thing. Just don't know about that. Good luck up there. |

When I was in the military I landed at an airstrip in Fallon. The place reminded me of the nice little runway in Flight of the Phoenix. |

Fallon is another one of those communities outside a good size city(Reno) that is really starting to take off in growth. It does get windy there,(like the desert) There are some VW wrecking yards there in Carson City area. |

Spent a couple of two-week stints at NAS Fallon many years ago. As noted earlier, it is not like Las Vegas in any way. There is a good deal of water in the area and quite a few ranches and farms. Reno is an hour of so away.
Here is some general Fallon info
http://www.city-data.com/city/Fallon-Nevada.html
Yes there has been a lot of cancer there:

Housing looks pretty reasonable to me (as I sit in my almost million dollar ordinary house in SoCal):

No it is not paradise but it is further west. In earlier posts you made it clear that Dad is pissed and depressed all the time and you were hell-bent to get away from the folks as soon as you are 18. Give it a shot - might surprise you. |

I've never been there, but I had my 55 shipped back from Carson City, Absolutely no rust, just the usual battery rot!
I've also heard there are quite afew salvage yards in the Carson City - Reno area!
Do a search on the web for the outbreak thing, I'm sure you'll come up with something.... |

Fallon is where the US Navy's Top Gun pilot school is located. When carriers deploy and need to train in attacking the enemy, they float off the coast of San Diego, while the pilots fly inland and "bomb" Fallon. My oldest brother lived in Hawthorne for many years. Once, while we were riding his bike towards Reno, fighter jets came out of nowhere, hugging the terrain and zipped out of sight. Fallon is the only means of civilization between Reno and Hawthorne as you head south. After that, the road is open until you hit Vegas, if you count Vegas as civilized (I count it as debauchery). |

What is wrong with the south? Have the Deliverance Brothers been trying to dress you up in a pig suit? Go find a retard that plays banjo and just chill out on the front porch with him and you will be left alone. |

As far as the cancer goes- always remember that a good job is
"to die for". |

Been to Fallon many, many times. Hot as hell in the summer and freezing in the winter.
It is very small and doesnt have a lot to offer. I have seen 2 or 3 vw's there.
Not far from Reno though, 2 words.....Legal Brothels.
If you do move there, go to pigs in space night at the Depot in Fallon, use your imagination. |

Josh, I'm a bit puzzled here. Do I get the feeling that you do not like the
South? The South of what? And why? I live in the south of Iowa , and
find it quite comfortable. We must know more, in order to analyze
your pent up hostilities. |

LmyASSoff!!!!! I like your style my brother! Hey listen, as far as the cancer concern there's one thing that I would do for sure and that's DON'T drink the local water. Not for coffee or soup or anything. Do that and I think you're o.k. Don't eat any locally raised chicken or eggs or that kind of stuff. That's where the source most likely would have to come from, the local underground water supply. Peace!........LOL! |

The South is what you make it Josh. There are just as many assholes anywhere else. Dont fool yourself into thinking there are not. I love the South, it is home, even if there are assholes here. If you have a bad attitude about it then it will more than likely not meet your standards. |

well at first i thought it would be cool and awesome to be in the south. so much history and culture. but that all changed soon after. dont get my wrong, there are a lot of things i like about the south, and a lot i do not like about out west. but me, personally, i would rather live out in the boonies in the desert, back where i was before coming to the south. im just the kind of person that only likes the dust tornadoes, not the real kind. i miss womping out in the middle of nowhere with the hot, dry sun beaming down on me. i miss the dried up mudd that would crack up, and fold over on itself. i miss the tumbleweeds rollin on by when i would walk around. i miss the aloneness you get when you are out far far away from civilization, out in the open and being sorrounded by quietness. i miss being able to camp in the desert on a clear night and looking up at the stars and watching the sattelites go by, the millions and millions of stars that are just lookiing down on me, just waiting to be in the next spot in the sky as the world moves around. i cant get that here in the south. |

I dunno- I'm a born and bred southern man. My family has been in the Charlotte area since the late 1600's. I couldn't call anyplace else home. I like traveling and getting out to see the world, and have definately seen a lot of it, but the southeast will always be home to me. Cali is nice, great weather, good scene and all, but you need a thunder storm or blizzard to shake things up every now and then. I'd be miserable in the desert. North Carolina will always be my favorite- there aren't too many places in the U.S. where you can drive to the ocean or the mountains in half a day or less... You're in woodstock GA right? Not too far from Atlanta... I'll probably end up in the area within the next 2-3 years. Barring the traffic, Atlanta is my favorite place in the south, with Nashville a close second. I'm up in school here in Asheville right now. It's a good spot, but a little too small and way too many hippies for my taste. Nice to visit though- Buck up kid, can't appreciate all the good aspects of a place if all you do is trash it. |
