I was working on a 74 Thing and had to remove an ear muff to replace a seal and do some clean up and I noticed that the air intake hole on the side of the body is really small in comparison to the dimensions of the ear muff. I should have taken a photo. In fact, you can probably cut 2" larger all the way around. Has anyone ever done this modification to let more air in the engine compartment and if so do you have photos and what was the result?

It's my belief the "muff" has little to do with engine cooling but rather with heater operation. I'm pretty sure that the actual opening behind the muff is larger that the louvers in a 73.

The muffs were installed to provide a fresher air source for the heating. It's a bit higher and forward than the 73's louvers. This is particularly true when the vehicle is standing still.

Some people have modified their scoops to provide additional air but I do not believe that is necessary for stock engines. The cooling fan can only pull in a finite amount of air regardless of what you do to the scoops. The "ram air" concept only works when the vehicle is moving.
