I have been hearing some people talking about changing there transaxle vw transmission to something called either a Bus or Truck Transmission. What are they talking about? I guess its used mostly in off road applications. I hear they are a lot stronger.

Thank for any info.

they are taliking about the transmission out of VW bus or truck.

assuming you have IRS, you want a trans out of a 68+ bus, of which there are 3 or 4 variations with different gearing.

002 transmissions started in 68, typically they had a 5.38 ring and pinion. This ratio works better for off road on the cheap. The latest 002's had 4.86 r/p, known as a pyramid box. After that it was a 091, mostly having a 4.57 r/p with a larger diff.

Why do you think you need a bus trans?

You don't need anything but what you have..... Type 1 transaxle is good enough for "street rod" (kit car)... About all I see is you need to reset rear torsion bars for more preload to raise rear of buggy a bit..... Bigger tires on rear would make it look better also...
