|
|
1966 Beetle converted to 12 volt system:
With the head lights on, the brake lights operate correctly in conjunction with the head lights.
When I have the head lights on, the tail lamps/running lights operate correctly.
With the Head lights off, and I turn on the right turn signal ,the right turn signal bulb blinks extremely faintly, yet the brake light blinks...brightly yet the brake pedal isn't being depressed?!, yet the left turn signal works normally under the same conditions.
When the head lights are on, brakes depressed, the rear right light, bright brake light and right turn signal all do not illuminate.
Confused yet? I am. Any ideas what is the issue? |

Guessing you mean "yet the left brake light blinks...". If so fix your grounds. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Anyone have a good reference or site to go to that shows how to ensure the car is properly grounded and techniques to use. Battery, transmission, lights, etc? |

Just follow the parts back to the ground cable on the battery and do not forget the body to transaxle ground strap.
Simply put, bulb to bulb holder, Bulb holder to taillight housing, taillight housing to fender, fender to body, body to both transaxle and battery.
Clean all connections with wire brush, or sandpaper, or acid if need be. Then apply a dielectric grease or at least Vaseline to keep oxygen away from corroding parts for as long as possible.
Solder up any riveted connections if made of steel or copper in the bulb holder, fuse box, and light switch will help greatly to reduce voltage drops there also. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Clean all light fixture mounting screws and the body they attach to-- this is how they ground. A fresh repaint will spoil this unless you remove the paint there.
With the lens off, use a jumper wire to temporarily add a new strong ground to the fixture, and see if the problem goes away.
Also, check that the socket contacts are not bent, and that the correct single-or-dual filament bulbs are fitted. There are multiple types that could be jammed in there but not be wired correctly. |

Fixed. It was a poor ground in the tail light. Scrapped aime paint off and used a star washer. Thank you very much for all the great advice. Dan. |
