I have a Scat 8-pin crankshaft and a DRP flywheel I bought from Aircooled.net http://vwparts.aircooled.net/DPR-Chrome-Vanadium-2...ywheel.htm

The flywheel is a standard SPG pattern. I know it should be tight, but using the glad nut I can only get the flywheel about 50% way on. There is gap. Also, just to get it that far took a LOT of work. More than I would expect.

I've read a few threads about crank / flywheel combos. Should I just get a scat flywheel?

Sounds like something is wrong? Could be the crank or the flywheel. Try a different combination if you have another crank or something.

Scat cranks come with the dowel pins out, so you can check the alignment much easier with the pins out. Those should both be good quality parts you have there, but...... does any given crank bolt to any given flywheel?? well probably not.
The chances of drilling 8 holes in perfect alignment is like trying to win the lottery. The more you play the higher your chances of winning, so, yeah sure try a different flywheel or 2. You'd THINK a scat flywheel would fit a scat crank, but who knows, let us know what you find. Someday all 8 pins will line up, either by chance or thanks to improving technology, but I've never seen it happen yet.

I would see if you can pull four of the non offset dowels out of the crank and see if you can fit the flywheel then. You can then see what dowel is not lining up and make adjustments to the flywheel.

Leave the four loose dowels out till you get the end play set, then drive them through the flywheel back into the crank....makes everything a lot easier....tighten that nut to 350 foot/lb at least.

If it's that tight, don't use the gland nut to draw it on any farther. The nut is meant to hold 300 some (or more) foot pounds but if it's only part way in you could pull the threads. I wouldn't hammer the dowels through either, if it's off, something is going to distort. You might possibly never get the flywheel back off again.
The idea to pull some of the dowels and try different combinations is good; figure out which one or one's is off, and fix that. Modok has a recent post describing how he reams the holes to fit, you'll find some good advice there.

I didn't say hammer the dowels through, I said make adjustments (ream is one way) to the flywheel for clearance and then drive the dowels through the flywheel....I've done it like this before and it works.

Are your Scat dowels 8mm or 5/16?
I had a problem several years ago and found they weren't 8mm. A ream may be all you need to fit your DPR flywheel to your Scat crank...

it may be the dowels or it may be the taper fit. is it dry? or did you lube it? I like some lube in there so it dosent gauld, that go,s for the threads too also the hp nuts have sharp edges on the flats that needs to be removed so it dosent gouge into the washer and farther increase tq it takes to tighten it. also if you have the seal(oring) in there it must be lubed, i like the silocone orings that also have a graphite coating on them. also deburr any sharp edges that may cut oring, and a slight champher to the dowel holes. but in the end yes they should be tighter than the popes.......golf cart going through a key hole. a skeleton key hole so his hat dont get knocked off..

This is most likely the problem. Depending on what flywheel I use, I sometimes have to ream all the holes otherwise it won't fit....

Can someone point me to that post? I think that's the right way for me to go.

There is this thread by Modok How to remove broken dowel pins (crank to flywheel) But this one may be it: 11/32" dowels.

OK. Got a lot of things I need to check out and try. I'll update everyone in a day or two.

Thanks!

Got home from work and took some measurements with the micrometer.

All of the dowels measure out to 8.01-8.03mm. Dowel holes on the flywheel measure out to 7.94-7.98mm.

I measured all of the gaps between the dowels to make 100% where the offset dowel was. I then did the same on the flywheel for the same reason.

I didn't have a tool to accurately compare the dowels on the crank to the holes on the flywheel. The pins are in there very tight. Not sure how to get them out. I think I can see where 2 of the dowels are ever so slightly different than the flywheel.

Should I carefully ream the 2 holes on the flywheel or should I try a Scat flywheel? John @ ACN offered to let me exchange flywheels.

Thoughts?

I can't find the thread where Modok outlines his process, will look some more later. I have bought two flywheels from DPR, and both needed work to "fit" correctly on the flywheel pins. While a pain in the ass, it sure is better than having it too loose. The first time I had a shop do the work, and they just drilled the flywheel holes oversize. Then it was too loose, and I had oversize dowels installed. The next time I used some Dykem to help figure out where what hole was off, and bought a reamer to open two holes a hair.

That sounds like a reasonable process to follow. Where did you get your reamer? What size? I found this on Amazon:

I don't think you're going to make decent holes in high strength steel with a 7$ reamer, and that one in particular I think is designed to be turned by hand with a T-handle. I'd lean more towards this reamer: https://www.amazon.com/Yankee-3150-Straight-Chucki...ng++reamer

I used a small adjustable reamer. While not ideal, it's what I had, and it let me take a little bit at a time. The steel wasn't really hard to cut, and I was barely taking anything off. It's amazing how little material will keep the flywheel from fitting correctly.

i thought everyone knew that SCAT flywheels dont fit right on SCAT cranks.
i guess i assumed that everyone also knew that SCAT is another word for SHIT.

This set should do the trick... Unless you have a recommendation. Smile
