Hey guys!! Need to do some major work on my dash, want to take it off completely and be able to drive it for some time. Can the steering column be re-attached without the dash?
Thanks, Marc.. |

Wont have a problem fabricating something, is it related to the column ?
On pictures I see two brackets coming down to the column, wont be enough?
I planing to do a temporary shelf for the instrument cluster that would be attached to those two brackets
Thanks

There are 2 brackets behind the dash already that support the column not the dash. |

But actually I lied I want to remove the thing(dash, heater core) permanently, haven't use the heater since I've owned it, motor needs to be change and I don't want to, and don't need to, I live in Cal and I want to make my van light weight in all aspect of it
Thanks

That is a fair bit of hassle for not much weight savings.
If you have your heart set on getting rid of it once you have the dash out, pulling the heater box and putting the dash back it would be easier that trying to figure if you can drive with the dash out. |

Saw a picture, I think it was Ben's that had the hole dash out on a dash removing article, it look huge the room saving up front, I find the dash is as is useless beside hiding what's behind

I just can't fathom wanting to own/drive a vanagon with the dash permanently removed. It will look like absolute $H!T all the time. Vanagons are appreciating in value. You might consider selling it and buying a POS Dodge Caravan or the like to use as the object of your destruction.
You never need to defog your windshield? |

The lower ones are. Look at what the upper column bracket actually bolts to(not the dash)- the 2 black brackets on either side of the master cylinder that attach to the bulkhead. The dash probably provides some side to side rigidity though.
I didn't see the part where you wanted to leave out the dash permanently. That seems like all kinds of fun in the event of a crash. |

If you had the tools/skills to do it, I could see cutting the dash so you retain the mounting for the column and the vents, but the rest (the top half) could be removed like the instrument cluster. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion
