Recently my son in law was driving 1of 3 of my families 73 vw things. He was pulling a horse trailer down hill. When he unhitched the trailer he tried to move the thing but it would not go into gear. It would grind trying to go into reverse and would not go into first. When it cooled down it went into both gears easily. Any ideas. Also for some reason the same vehicle keeps ripping both inner and outer cv boots on the drivers side. Any ideas? Thank you.

Grinding when attempting to engage reverse and inability to engage first, sounds like the clutch is not disengaging when the pedal is depressed. Check for excessive free play at the pedal. It could be adjusted wrong, or you could have a clutch cable that is slowly breaking (unraveling). Or you could have more serious problems in your clutch throwout arm, throwout bearing, and or clutch itself.
If the suspension has not been modified for higher lift, then your CV boot issues are probably caused by cheap (low quality) replacement boots.

In addition to checking clutch cable; two bolts under the stick shift might need to be loosened and the plate adjusted so that it's slightly more to the left.
