Are these correct for a 56? Matches the one I have, but it came in a box of parts, so not sure...

No, those are for the '58-'64 Beetle. The oval style was just the base and the thin shaft was part of the wiper blade. The older blades are not easy to find so I am using another type of '58-'64 arm (they look like smaller versions of the '65-'67 arm and with a strait end for the older blades) with cut down blades. For the drivers side I cut the '58-'64 blade down to 8 inches long, cutting the excess off the longer (from the center anchor) side. For the passenger side I cut the blade down to 7-3/4 inches off the long side and then cut the short side down 1/4 inch. With the smaller window the right wiper has to stop a little higher so the trim of the other end keeps it from hitting the window rubber in the fully up position. I posted a picture of my new wiper blades installed after I also replaced the wiper shafts. The new blades and shafts where from Wolfsburg West.

The top wiper is 1953-57.
The bottom wiper is 1958-64

Can't date the base(s). Need a clear shot of the end with the slot to determine correct year

I don't think it is quite correct after looking at the right one. I can see a screw holding the wiper blade on the thin arm instead of the thin arm being part of the blade and attached at the base with a screw (like the upper one in your original picture, I missed that before.)

I didn't find that page you found at WW. They have a main page of wiper parts with the picture here. From there I found '58-'64 wiper blades (clicking #43) for $9 each. Number 42 shows the original oval style wiper blade/arm.

ARe the part no 113955408A & 113955407A (as ww put them) correct as oval part no?

Would a 58-64 wiper arm and blade fit an oval shaft? or it is only a matter of getting it period correct?

The wiper shafts are the same size. The arms can be installed even though they are slightly longer. The wiper blades have to be cut shorter for the smaller oval windshield. Above I included a picture link to my windshield and wipers. If you can find those type of '58-'64 wiper arms I would recommend them as they clamp to the wiper shafts much better than the original style.

If you are building a daily driver how it works is more important, in my opinion. If you are trying to make a show stock car then you will want the original part. Some people go to great lengths to have correct parts, down to the month and day as changes happened even during a model year.

Evfun, thanks for the detailed explanation on wiper length. What about the wiper shaft grommet for pre 57? Are they important? The body at the hole where shaft exit looks different between oval and later year. Oval appeared to be flatter. Not sure i need the grommet to get the right angle for the wiper.

The grommet for the wiper shaft is oval window. The wiper assembly is different between the oval window bugs and the '58-'64 Bugs. I just did a wiper shaft replacement on my '57 Bug as the old ones got so sloppy the wipers jammed one morning on the way to work. Here is a quick look at the wiper shafts, as they are 2/3 or what holds the wiper assembly in the body (the other being the bolt under the hood.)

I have two types of rectangular windshield wiper bases. One set has a narrower slot width for the blade arm. Is the narrow one oval and the wider one early sixties?

I also have two sets of NOS narrow slot bases, one set almost perfect, one set scuffed a little and two sets of NOS one piece wiper/arm assemblies still in the sealed bags with part number labels. Narrow arms. Are these valuable?

Many thanks

… that's funny - if they work on a '58, they'll work on a '56- difference being, ones a little wider, but will work, just fine - But I rarely drive my old W in the rain - i'm a big fan of multi-speeds, like on my Civic.

Edited as requested

I have a few wiper arms and blades that I am not using.
Are they the same on a RHD or LHD car ? Presume they just sit at different positions on the windscreen.
2 same hand one good rubber, the other one has part of the edge missing, other side is no rubber. Plus a couple of arms and w/west new blades.

… take it from me - i've also gotten out, but eventually got back in, with a vengeance and wished i'dda' kept all my parts - cool. get out … bye, for now - see you when you return though - z

ps: keep all your spares - be a happy-horder
