Hi Don,
The Ghia VIN won't tell you the options that came with the car. Like Scotty suggests, the best answer will come from the "Birth Certificate" which you will have to order from Volkswagen. The details on how to do that is outlined in that tread.
Good luck and I hope the Ghia brings you lots of enjoyment.

Thank you all for the information and I apologize for my slow response. We have had house guests in from overseas and all other projects went on the back burner for a while!
I am going to order the birth certificate which sounds very interesting!
I looks like (from the paint/interior) combinations the only orange that came on Ghia's in 1970 or most any other year is Blood Orange!?
I am getting back in to the project now and likely will wind up with more questions!!
Thank you, Don |

The paint code can also be found inside of the trunk on the passenger side - if its still there. Its a small silver sticker below the vin plate. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

I just received the birth certificate for my 1970 Ghia convertible to find it was born with an Autostick. It is currently a manual transmission.
I am wondering how rare of a vehicle it would be and if worth changing back to automatic.
I think I would prefer to keep it as a manual transmission however it would up the value...???
Rare does not always mean worth more however and I think it is probably the case here!
Thank you!! |

Rare? Probably. Worth more? Probably not.
By my rough calculations only about 20% of production was AS cars. Probably less for Ghia convertibles. If you go by the 20% number and cars that were converted and died of old age I would say there are few around. I rarely see them - at least in a drivable condition.
They may appreciate in the future but who knows? In my opinion it would not be worth converting back unless perhaps you were doing a body off restoration, wanted an AS and an original car. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Ordered July...received November. It's been taking up to 7 or 8 months in recent years. Four months is good news! |
yeah good news for him, I have yet to order mine and with my luck it will be just under a year..
hard to get over the price though , last one I ordered 12yrs ago was $15 US.. _________________ BUS WANTED: 13 window BUS any year considered.. |

Thank you for the input!! I was thinking the same on the Autostick. Although possibly a rare combination with the convertible, I prefer the manual transmission and would think not a huge bump in value as an automatic.
As well, I had the manual transmission fully rebuilt recently with a freeway flier gear and hate not to use it
Very insightful as always...thanks again! |

Signal Orange is a common colour for a '70
What colour did your birth certificate say? _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Signal Orange is what mine was originally too. A color change back will have to wait awhile but it in the plans as I hate the black paint color . _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine
