I've inherited a '71 Super with just the one owner and it has what appears to be all of the factory literature and maintenance records in the glovebox. One of the items of interest was this:
It does appear to be some kind of computer punch card, and some of the translations appear to indicate modes of transportation such as 'rail, boat, stevedore'.
What purpose did this serve the VW factory? |

This may not have been factory so much as exporter or importer. I've never seen one, but it looks to be a combination punch (Hollerith) card and scan-tron card. May have been used to gather data for transportation and to record packing position and any damage sustained in transit.
Is that your chassis number in the top right corner? Great find! |

Wow! I'd bet the dealers rarely left those in the cars- if they ever made it all the way to dealers. Very cool indeed. Referring to the import of 181 and 411 models date it right in there too. Is it possibly related to a tourist delivery program or anything? _________________

Oh cool. I will scan it up when I get some free time. And yes that's the VIN of the beetle it came with. One previous owner! |

It looks like a train freight car packing layout, for the cars.
Nifty item. _________________ the3rdrock.com - …musings, discoveries and postulating, by a restless itinerant in search of enlightenment.

The gallery is fine to post this but it would be nice to have a clean scan instead of a photo.
Thanks! _________________ How to Post Photos
