What years where changes on the engine cases meterial?
Aluminium, Magnesium, Electron?
What I need to know is just wich ones/years can catch fire if welding is done at or close to them? Can they at all?

No one?
I want to weld on something that stucks in the hole for the oil pressure switch.
Don't ask. Long story.
But I do not want to see that thing burn away.
It is a 1955 engine.

Sorry Carsten, I can't answer your specific question but I have another that's related. Is there any issues machining an early case (line bore)? it's a 47 which I think is magnesium.

Thanks
Kevin

47 crank case is made of aluminum. They were magnesium alloy to 1944 (both were in use during some period), then aluminum alloy 1944-50, and again magnesium alloy from 51.

Old topic....

The switch from alu-case to magnesium happened in February 1951. Does anybody know the exact engine number where this happened?
