If you know as little as you say " stripping it down " could be the worst thing you could do .
Read build threads ; get a plan ; make a list .....Whats Your time availability ???
How much money do you have on a monthly bassis to keep this project going ??
Read the samba classifieds and see how many " projects " are for sale because someone got in too deep .
Initial estimates should be doubled ; Twice as much time and twice as much money to do your project .
My " one year " sedan delivery project is now 2 1/2 years . _________________ 63 two fold rag

Everything GrampaPete said is correct.
I got a sweet deal on a 67 from CL. It was a POS for sure. So I brought it home and started taking it apart. Once I figured out what I needed parts wise, I started buying. At about the $1400 point I took a step back and realized it was never going to be a show car of any sort. Maybe a nice driver someday. Just not this year or the next for that matter.
I read a number of build threads. In one of those threads was the best advice I have ever read. Buy the Best car you can afford and work from there. So I began a search for a better car to work with. I landed a 67 from the samba classifieds that was mechanically redone front to back. This is my daily driver.
Think hard as to what the end result of your hard work and learning will be. Are you looking for a nice driver? A Show car? Concourse show car?
Be honest with yourself and proceed from there.
If I were to start again with your 65. I'd make it stop and run first. Then work out all of the cosmetic things that bother you. But DON'T take it apart. You'll quickly get discouraged and ultimately give up. I know I have been there. Get it driving and learn the quirks that all ACVW's have. Each has it's own personality. These are fun cars that attract attention everywhere you go.
Good Luck. And Welcome to the samba. _________________ I have learned over the years.

How do you figure? I have a 61 with a 67 rear apron. Or is there something else. Didnt look real close.
Get the "how to keep your VW alive" book. Will get you familiar with the cars as well as cover most repairs. Its a great resource. I got one with my first VW about 12-15 years ago and am on my second copy....
Assess what you have - body rot is the biggy and missing running boards usually means the heater channels are toast. Door bottoms look rough. Start with that and then look at mechanical. Wouldnt even start doing much besides clean up until you have a handle on what you are in for.
And then you need to see if your skills can do what you need or if you need to farm stuff out. Do you have a budget? Body can get expensive. And any classic gets into money. I had a guy stop by yesterday and wanted a ballpark to buy and restorea 66 I have that looks a little worse than yours. My labor rate is not very high and for a real nice driver/possible show winner (not VW exclusive show), he would be looking at $15-20K. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

I'm no expert, but the decklid and emergency flasher were my clues. How about the headlights....are they correct for a '65?
And the engine looks earlier than a '65.....is that a 36hp fuel pump? _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

center defrost also. chrome strips on the front door panels .yes 36 HP engine.
First figure out what you have before you start ripping it apart and turning it into an unfinished project. sorry to be so blunt but this happens often to unsuspecting buyers.
This one is a typical hodge podge of parts
What are the VIN #'s on the tunnel and in the spare tire well? _________________ Rick

VIN plate in tire well
VIN stamp on tunnel under back seat
The numbers should match.
65 has king and link front end and 66 up has ball joint front end.
No title no buy for me,
Hope it works out and good luck _________________ Rick

The body is at least a 66. As stated earlier, the center defrost vent and the emergency flasher switch were introduced on the 66 models. Ball joint front end was also a first for the year. Although, it is possible it could be a 65 chassis. Look under the back seat on the tunnel to see the VIN. If it starts with 115, the chassis is a 65, 116 would be a 66. |

The interior is a '66, which is a one year only where the seats have a basketweave center strip bordered by smooth vinyl on either side. The color is Pagelle. Also, a '66 has a black steering wheel which yours has.
By looking at the paint color under the trim, it appears that it was originally Pearl White L87.
