Yes, a blower and a supercharger are exactly the same thing. It's a belt driven air pump that is really a much less complicated power adder than it looks. I am using a modern blower to copy the vintage kits used on 36-40hp back in the 50's and 60's. The most common one was sold by Judson:

(Pic borrowed from gallery)

This is the best fitting VW kit, designed to all bolt on easily that many Vw owners could do at home in one day. You can keep a stock fuel pump and distributor. These kits are highly sought after and to find one in great shape that is complete, you are looking at $1500-2500. They aren't without issues though, cracked housings, pitting, wear. These are lubricated by oil mist in the intake system with a Marvel Mystery oiler. The Judson is a sliding vane design that uses phenolic (a plastic) vanes that spin like an airplane propeller. It's an out dated concept, but does the job of fitting in the engine compartment.

I have to use an electric fuel pump and a "distributorless" ignition system just like all modern cars use. That's a whole other can of worms but the info is out there.

This is as far as I can go on the top side of the blower until I get a carb

Pulling the body off was no sweat using a chain hoist. As easy as pulling up window blinds with one hand. Wink I can't be doing heavy lifting while I recover from ankle surgery. This is a great setup for you guys with back and knee problems too.

All pan bolts came out with no issues except one. The thread insert on one of the heater channels was just spinning around so the I had to take a grinder to the bolt head. I covered the ragtop with plastic because the chains were super oily. I used 4 small mover dollies under the pan and rolled it out the back.

How about this pan?!! It's in amazing shape and even the original pan gasket is still perfect and held in with the OG nails. I do have a German WW replacement though. I've got some small issues to fix and redo the plumbing and it's going straight to paint.

The big bars welded onto the frame horns tied to the roll cage for rigidity and to eliminate wheel hop. It was very noticeable and the car squats down when you shift, so the bars will stay and still bolt to the package tray as before. I am adding a steel plate to connect them to each other. Basically, a built in "Kafer" bar.

The PO battery tray repair is about as good as I've seen for a job done in the 90's or earlier. I'm just going to remove the funky modern tray and clean up the welds. I really couldn't be happier as it looks like they even used an OG patch and its never been easy to notice the repair all these years.

I was able to soak the choke cable and finally removed it from the tube. I may be reusing it for the side draft carb I'll need to use with the supercharger. The original fuel line has been clogged shut for many years and you can see my temporary fuel line I put in years ago. 16 years- this car is way overdue for a finish.

Threw some weight on the front and set the tie rod adjustments before removing the beam

Mounts were welded in a long time ago for an external oil cooler. I never hooked it up before but I think I will this time.

With that aftermarket battery tray cut out, the stock tray underneath was not bad at all. This is the most rust I've ever seen on the car, and it's nothing.

Two of the pre 60 rubber floor mat tabs have been cut off, I made new ones and they'll go on soon.

This area for the shift coupler inspection cover was so wavy and boogered up I was never able to get the cover on properly. The pan gasket was a little crooked and bulged out and with the body on, you could never really it straight. Fits nice now

I drilled the holes in this plate to tie in the frame horn bars. It will sit in the car and sandwich the package tray. Then, I can put insulation and carpet over it.

Seat belt mounts welded in. The outer ones are just a nut and washer, the tunnel ones are seatbelt adapter plugs from WW welded directly into it.

I always just assumed the pan had regular undercoating and I would just heat it and scrape it off. Nope, it's Zolatone. It's a real pain to remove but it's why the pans are so nice. Looks like a PO did it right after fixing the battery tray.

There are quite a few of dents to heat and straighten to reverse the car's hood ride past of being hit on speed bumps

Passenger side jack point was twisted and barely hanging on with broken welds. It's been irritating me for years. If you tried to use it, it would push against the running board.

There's always been this annoying raised dent next to the clutch pedal- about 1/4 the size of a softball. Heat, hammer, dolly and some water to shrink it down. The whole front driver quarter pan half was sort of concave because of it. It's pretty darn flat again!

I was able to straighten the OG jack point on the bench and got it welded back on. It's a real joy to do the work on such rust free parts.

The only thing left to address is the battery tray. It'll never be perfect, but the PO didn't really try to clean up the welds, it was just a little bit rushed of a repair from the days people didn't do such high quality metal work on a Beetle. After I dress these areas up, I'll skim coat with a small amount of fiberglass filler to seal the welds. Then, pressure wash, prime and paint. I'm pretty sure the pan was already media blasted before Zolatone was applied, so I don't feel it's necessary. After taking the wire wheel to it, I couldn't find any OG paint or rust underneath. It's just a bit oily from the torsion area back and the brake fluid contamination at the frame head.
