1800 cases and cranks are not that hard to find. Check in Classifieds. Also check with Suburban Engine in Boston if you are looking for someone to build it for you.

I'm happy to swap - instead of rebuild - just looking for legit swap - not apretty painted engine block.

Whats left of mine can be sent along too - possible rebuild.

Keep em coming

Suburban engine is/was it in that area. Gary's webpage is gone so you'll have to try to locate a phone number and call. He took over a few years back when Boston Bob passed. Type 4 engines aren't really common in well built exchange motors. A new turnkey engine from someone like Jake is $25K. Lots of $4K swap engines but the builders can be less than stellar.

Busdepot over in PA has rebuilds (or brokers them anyways)

http://www.busdepot.com/022100625

Quote:
Rebuilt Engine - '76-'77 Bus
Remanufactured 2.0 Liter Longblock, fully rebuilt including upgraded heads. Solid Lifters.
Part Reference Number: 022100625
Core Deposit: $600.00
Availability: Usually ships in approx. 3-4 weeks (built to order)
$1,799.95

Quote:
Detailed Description

Not all rebuilt engines are the same! No assembly-line engine, this is built to order by a specialist in Bus engines with 30 years experience. The case is align-bored and fitted with new main, rod, and cam bearings, new pistons and cylinders, rebuilt crank, rods, cam, and lifters, all new gaskets, and German flywheel seal. The heads feature an improved valve seat design for better reliability than the original, as well as new guides and exhaust valves, and reground intake valves. They are step cut to take today's lower quality unleaded fuel. The engine is then fully bench-tested, and covered by the manufacturer's 12 month/12,000 mile limited warranty (see documentation for details).

Note: Also available with Hydraulic Lifters for $150 more - order part # 022100625A.

Shipping: Round-trip shipping (engine to you and your core back) is approx. $340-$580 within the continental U.S. If you need it delivered by a truck with a lift gate, that costs additional; please note it in the "would you like to add notes to your order" field on checkout.. The shopping cart may not calculate shipping correctly but we will email you with a quote

I build my own top quality engines since the 1970's, but no longer for others because it would cost like Jake's engines almost by the time my labor and chasing down NLA parts were figured in. Where someone goes for an engine doesn't matter to me, but I hate to see them spend good money then feel burned if something goes wrong out of the crate.

I didn't mention that one on purpose. Do a search on AVP because that is what BD was selling. They are built by a guy here in the Sacramento area. Warranty will be you pay to crate and ship all the way back to California after arguing with the guy that the failure was his fault, not yours. This is from a late August 2015 Wesfalia.org thread but you can find many threads like it on the web, or here at TheSamba.

Quote:
DO NOT BUY A BUS DEPOT REPLACEMENT ENGINE
ALSO KNOWN AS "AVP ENGINE REBUILDERS"

I am currently going thru an engine replacement for my 85 westy. I made the sad mistake of purchasing the 2.1 upgrade from THE BUS DEPOT. I bought the engine from them 1.5 years ago now and have yet to drive more than 1,000 miles. The first engine they sent went less than 800 miles, yes that is 800, not 8,000. It had more than one fatal flaw including not one but 2 bad heads and also a leak down on the rings of at least one cylinder. When I called bus depot, who were happy to take my money, they just pass me on to AVP. they are a third party engine builder that Bus Depot uses. Bus Depot does absolutely nothing to back up this product. I am left to fight it out with AVP

I just got my van back with the SECOND BUS DEPOT replacement engine after more than a year of headaches, towing costs, additional expensive repairs due to attempts to skirt the issue by the engine builder, missing multiple road trips and sitting on the side of the road. now with the SECOND ENGINE from BUS DEPOT/AVP. I also had to pick up more installation costs to have their bad engine removed and to reinstall their replacement engine.

So now I have gone less than 100 miles and there is an oil pressure problem. This is also an internal issue. AVP is again wanting me to jump thru hoops to prove it is not something other than what it probably is which is a bad oil pump or clogged oil way

So basically I have spent 1.5 years and thousands upon thousands of dollars to install two useless engines from Bus Depot and AVP, and its not over yet.
I can only imagine what other atrocities lie inside these engine cases. I suspect if you have one of their engines and its running, its only a matter of luck and time. I could go on and on about this issue and all the ridiculous things AVP made me go thru while they tried their best to find a melted heat tab so they could void my warranty but it would be a novel.

SIDE NOTE: BTW I replaced the entire cooling, fuel injection, and ignition system upon first installing the new engine and had them all checked again upon installing the second engine for those who like to blame other systems

I repeat

DO NOT BUY A BUS DEPOT OR AVP REPLACEMENT ENGINE

And you will be looking for a very long time if you expect to find one of any quality for less in $$ and / or wait. If you want something better ask Jake Raby what his least expensive engine for a late bus costs.

Also notice not many people are commenting because this comes up all the time. Someone needs an engine for a bus and they shop hoping to find a "deal." There are none. One is lucky these days just to find the parts for a 40 year old foreign built car.

I'm willing to pay for it.

But I just need block and heads -

Not whole engine.

And I'm hoping to find something that offers warranty type situation which I realize will cost more.

To be honest I thought it would be easier, and I indeed appreciate all the help. Thus far.

Keep em coming.

recycled jack has cases. Might have 1800 heads. I am a little concerned because usually it is the crank that destroys the case. I was under the impression you wanted someone to build the motor for you and that you weren't going to build it yourself.

Correct

I need it built but the main case.

My dual carbs alt points starter are good to bolt on.

SO I need the main part with valves and covers and then swap everything.

I reach out to a few people but no one has anything ready to go yet.

I did talk to West Coast core but I also read some comments in feedback about them too.

So from what you just wrote I read you want a long block (case, crank, rods, heads etc but with no tin or carbs etc., and you want it yesterday not in a month or two. Is that what you want?

I do have money to spend as I agree cheap isn't always right and I'd rather pay once right then keep chasing issues.

I've been in touch with about 7 people who deal in parts and engines but no one has em built YET.

When it went (the engine) I wasnt so worried as I figured they'd be available in some form. I guess I thought wrong.

SGkent i appreciate all your responses and follow ups!!!!

Still looking!!

This guy is in Queens:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=SHALOM4EVER

has had a bunch of type 4 stuff for sale for decent prices, including cases. If you go, check the case where the oil pickup bolts into the case, over-torquing the screen plate causes the case to crack here, and renders it forked. I have never researched a fix for that, perhaps it can be welded up by a machine shop. Just something to keep in mind when searching for type 4 blocks.

Suburban in Boston only does 2000cc T4 builds, only hydraulic lifters. But, speak to Gary, he may do it. You can source the P+Cs for the 1800 at bugcity while they last.

Leaning towards SCAT VW in Cali - 2.0

Any thoughts?

Its a rebuild and "new" run in the shop before shipped - (so tested) has anyone gone there?

there was a new old stock motor in Europe for sale over the weekend. The engine was built around an Industrial engine released as new stock in 1991. Wanted 3900 EU. Looked for it again just now and could not find it. Might still be there. Found it on Ebay or thru one of the EU VW stores. Italy, France, Germany because I remember translating the page to be sure I was seeing it correctly.
