I have a 1776 type 3 with duel weber idf carbs. These are the most unreliable a POS I ever drove. I've had them since new the car becomes undriveable within 2 seconds of running perfect. So I am looking for a good replacement set it's 1776 duel port head. I see a ton of kits if I go 1 barrel I'll need manifolds and everything. |

Lots of people running Weber idf's successfully, but they have to get them jetted correctly for their particular engine/car. Go to www.aircooled.net and read their Technical articles on carburetors before calling them for free advice & replacement jets etc. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

I believe that. However I built this car with every nut, bolt, line, rubber everything was new. The first 5000 miles it ran perfect then it gave me trouble in NH the first year on Vacation. It now has 13000 miles and the carbs have had to be rebuilt and or disassembled and cleaned about 20 times twice in the last 200 miles. It's not jetting it runs perfect then out of the blue within seconds it is undriveable. The last time I was 1 mile from home and almost didn't make back. I love this car and hate this car at the same time.the clutch broke at 11000 mi the steering box got sloppy at 8000 mi the inner cv cage shattered at 5000 the master cylinder went at 10000 mi not to mention the engine is on it's way out. My brothers car has more than 50000 mi on 1776 type 1 with 0 problems. |

When you say un-drivable, what is the engine doing?
Do you lose one cylinder, is it backfiring through the carbs, is there no power? A description would be helpful. I am a carb guy and you will not find a better carb for a VW engine then the weber IDF series.
For now two things to look at without knowing the symptoms. Good clean air and fuel. Either one of these if wrong can cause you problems.
You need to have quality air cleaners that are making a good seal in the housings. I put a thin layer of grease on the top and bottom of the filter element. The Weber IDFs have and extremely small idle jet, which can be clogged by anything that bypasses the filter. The usual symptoms are burping and farting through the carbs at an idle. However, the idle jet supports the whole enrichment circuits up to about 3/4 throttle. Therefore badly clogged idle jets will make the engine run poorly through out the power band.
Good fuel supply is also needed. They need a good quality filter and the fuel pressure should not be over 5 psi. One very common culprit to bad running is to use the round silver fuel pressure regulators. If you have one use a BF hammer to adjust it, then get a quality one like a Holley. I have seen multiple engines that ran poorly with these installed. Once the were removed, the engines ran great. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110
