I'm on a two week road trip in my 77 Westy, from my home in Ontario, Canada through upstate NY, Vermont, New Hampshire and circling back via Quebec.
So far, the bus is doing well - although a couple of things need adjustment. I need to try to adjust the clutch a bit, and the sliding door is getting harder to open. Not sure if I have all the tools I need on the road to do the door handle, so will have to put up with it and hope it does not get worse, or maybe there are some Samba folks local to where I am that could help out?
Right now I am in Littleton, NH and will be here until Saturday. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

Squirt of silicone spray into the lock and latch might ease up that door until you get home, clean, and lubricate correctly. _________________ .ssS! |

Unless it was wet and you were trying to dry it out, WD-40 is worthless. It's not a lubricant, it's a water displacer. Get yourself a can of Liquid Wrench or Pb B'Laster and get rid of that WD40 crap.
If you need a place to do some work on your Bus near Syracuse, NY on your way home, I'm less than 10 mins off of the NYS Thruway. Plenty of space and whatever tools you need...and lots of spare parts too. Good luck with the rest of your trip. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

If you have facebook look up granite state air cooled club. They should be able to point you in the right direction. Johns car corner in VT is a good resource for parts or help as well. I squirted WD-40 in the lock and latch, and it is great now. Thanks. Should be ok for the trip. |
That will stay longer than silicone. Bravo Zulu. _________________ .ssS! |

WD-40 seems to have lovers and haters. It is marketed as a lubricant, that leaves oil behind, so not just water displacement. All I can say is that for now, it did the job. |
It does leave lubricant behind. It isn't a great penetrant, there are better things.

I use engine oil on rear hinge. The rear hinge has two separate bushings, one visible at the door and the other under the sliding door cover. Both need a good baptism of engine oil. Wipe off residual oil drooling over the next week or so with great gladness.
