I am working on a 1987 VW Westie, floor to topper, rebuild and I want to upgrade/update the engine. I am looking at GoWesty and FAS. I like FAS because they offer higher horsepower and turn-key kits. What are some other US companies that you have worked and what did you like about their product? |

Anyone have any experience with www.foreignautosupply.com? I am really liking their turn-key kit options. |

I think Westy Conversion, Syncro Conversion, High Roof Conversion sounds like a cool conversion, Engine conversion I am sick of reading about.
But I agree that FAS stuff is awesome.

All of those guys at FAS are really top notch. That conversion is the best I have seen.
Call them up and talk to them. They are as honest as the day is long and will tell you anything you ask. |

I purchase a diesel oil pan from them for my inline4/ABA swap. They were great to work with, shipping was very fast and the oil pan is in fantastic shape! Plus, your VW will still be a VW, _________________ 1981 Westfalia with a 2001 Cabrio ABA

I'm committed to my 2.1 L WBX, but if it ever needs replacing, I like the idea of a rebuilt 2.2 L WBX from Vanistan or RJE, or the FAS GEN. V Gas.
As far as I know, there aren't many folks around here running the FAS GEN. V, so if you go this route, a build thread would be really nice. If you're in the Chicago region, I'd love to see it going in, and get a ride when it's running! _________________ Eric

I bought several parts from them through my 10+ years of ownership of my Tiico converted westy. They were always great to deal with, certainly much better than Peter from Tiico was. They seem to have put in the research and development that the I4 conversions deserved. I haven't driven any of their later versions, but I loved my Tiico Westy. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

Tiico was an early I4 kit. The Gen V is light years ahead of those.

yeah, i stopped in and toured his shop while in WW not too long ago. He's been there and done that with all things VW engine wise.
Super nice guy, too. His engine choice was not the solution I am going to go with though. _________________ __________

For the OP:
Rocky's web site isn't the best, but here's a link to his Samba classified ad for rebuilt WBX engines that provides good info.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1227011
Also, as you probably already know, a rebuilt WBX engine from Vanistan or RJE isn't really in the same price point as the FAS GEN. V kit. _________________ Eric

FAS did my conversion to the Gen V. With 400,000 plus mile on my 85 westy, they also restored the transmission, power steering, cooling, and a/c systems.
I have been super happy with the whole shebang! Their recommendations thru the process were always very helpful and spot on. The workmanship is detailed and fastidious. The communication that is so often missing with shops, is excellent. An email is most always answered the same day. And the post-restore support has been without question, solid. Very knowledgable and always willing to share the knowledge.
As you can tell, I am super happy! _________________ 85 westy-1.9-standard trans, FAS GenV 2.0 |

FAS guys are great. Chris there helped me numerous times both pre and post purchase to get my inline 4 set up. I purchased their billet products, E code ECU, muffler hanging kit and I'll eventually go with their engine cradle design too.
There are a few guys now with the Gen V conversions and are super happy with performance and noise, eons ahead of the old first run TiiCo kits.
Don't count the TiiCo's dead yet, these guys re-engineered a pile of fixes to get them running much better and quieter.
If you cant go Gen V because of cost, they also provide lots of ABA conversion parts etc to get you a good inline 4 option for less dollars.
I've had good experiences with them and their products. _________________ John.

Are there any conversions that meet CA smog AND have flat six or V6 power?
200HP or better, with fat torque curve? (at least = to minivan power)
Is the FAS Gen V non-turbo engine $13,000, uninstalled??? -and that's only 135HP/135 ft. lbs.
How much is an -installed, turnkey- FAS GEN V conversion?
Has anybody attempted Porsche watercooled Flat 6 engine with Tiptronic?
Watercooled Pcars 996 engines used are -relatively- cheap ($10K-15K)
How about a watercooled version of the Porsche R32

I would recommend that everyone considering a high HP engine swap do some reading about trying to keep a tranny together after they do this. To spend in excess of $10,000 so you can speed from tranny shop to tranny shop makes little sense to me. |
