Just for fun... thought I'd post a pic showing the seal...
This one also show's why Helmut's pop-top canvas is nice... with the white screen... as opposed to the black screen, carried by everyone else.

Having made a lot of backpacking shelters using various kinds of mesh, you might be interested to know that darker mesh is easier to see through. I've used black and different greys and the difference is more dramatic then I would have though. White mesh sounds impractical to me, especially if I consider it getting dirty. _________________ ~Kevin

So that's interesting - the original seal from my euro delivery SO-44 is now long gone (alas), but the parts of the seal that were on my bus when I got it from the OO looked like the first picture, and didn't look like the second (and other known OG seal pictures I've seen).
Now - with nearly 100k miles on it by the mid 90s and a full respray, it's certainly likely that the seal on mine was an early aftermarket or replacement unit.... but, datapoint.
I rather doubt I kept any of it from back then when I put a bulb seal on it, but maybe it'll show up someday in storage.. |

Update... should be on the boat & US bound sometime next week.
Manufacturer will be sending me a video about how to cut the ends to length / deal with the metal u-channel... will post it when I have it. Hopefully it will be a vid of "the seal"... vs. some random similar seal. _________________ aka: Evan

I got a pic the other day... not too happy with it... but not sure how unhappy.
The seal is missing a little bit of "meat" at the inside corner of the main flap part.... where it meets the U-channel.
I told the manufacturing rep "I thought the drawing was a design input and not just a cartoon to look at."
More info when I have some...

That is disappointing, but it sure looks a lot better than the one that's available now from WW, IMHO. _________________

So, obviously the seal production screwed up. Waiting to hear if they will (again) agree to make per drawing. If so, another little wait. If not... back to interviewing manufacturers. My rejected 2nd choice mfr may become the new 1st choice. _________________ aka: Evan

Will do...
Since I have this info... figured I'd share. I just wish I was giving it to your with a nice new seal
Hopefully it comes in handy.
How to cut metal segmented seal... find the void between the segments... watch the rest... (person points out the vertical slit by moving snips up & down a couple times)...
Link
Fitment...
1) Remove all old seal.
2) Clean / prepare top to your liking.
3) Measure around your top and add one foot. (less is probably ok) It is better to be long than short. No glue is needed.
4) Start at the center of the rear of the top and roll/push the seal on in one direction. Do not stretch it on, the molding will shrink and you do not want a gap in the rear.
5) Once you have rolled the seal around the top you will go beyond the starting point about an 2 inches, then cut the excess.
6) Peel back the molding about 2 feet from one side and re-roll the seal pushing it back as you roll (to make it fit tightly together).
If still to long and you can't get the seal to meet, then cut the excess in small increments, peel back molding about 2 feet and re-roll.
A single segmented piece of the metal u-channel can be fatigue bent / broken off and removed.
Take care in removing a segment, as to not damage the seal.
Continue this procedure until the ends meet tightly.
You might want to tape down a swath of waxed paper for this next step...
7) Peel back the molding about 6" on both ends, add silicone/black RTV to the edge of the top and re-roll the molding on to the top.
The silicone will keep the molding from shrinking and causing a gap in the rear.
8.) After you have installed the molding, get a pair of pliers and tape the ends of the jaws.
(don't pick a pair of pliers where the seal will get caught in the jaws)
The tape will keep the pliers from cutting the molding.
The segmented aluminum channel inside the molding will bend and grip the top.
9) Squeeze the part of the molding that attaches to the top every 6" to 12". _________________ aka: Evan

This can't be stressed enough - the idea is to get as MUCH seal as possible squeezed on, because it WILL SHRINK. The effort put into avoiding stretching, and pushing back into itself as you slide it on (instead of pulling it and pushing it on, you push it on by applying the pressure back into itself) will pay off a few years down the road.
For those who've never done this, anyway. |

Good timing...
I didn't let a little set back derail the effort.
Production efforts will begin this week.
Time to completion = 30 days.
+ shipping time.
It won't be long. _________________ aka: Evan

That is GREAT news Evan! Way to be persistent!
Damn! You are in Grover Beach? I just drove a SO-42 right through there and up Hwy 1 along the coastline all the way up thru Big Sur and on to Monterey on Sunday afternoon!

Metal channel not shown...
The second image is one of the revision iterations that I submitted...
The curvature of original seal below is a little bit "trained"... from being in the pop-top "down" position for eons (in the sun).
For the new seal... I straightened the original out just a fuzz & then took radius / height dimensions.
