Guys,
I'm trying to track down why my fan whines so much --
Nothing stuck in the fan or the doghouse that I can find.
Its a 36hp Scat shroud, full thermostat flaps and I have a venturi ring.
Thoughts?!

Are you sure it's the fan or the tension bearing? _________________ Glenn

Bearings in the alternator? Fan not rubbing I assume. Bet it's the alternator.
Speaking of bearings...those are some nice looking adapters on your linkage!
Why do you have your center arm on the same plane as the carb arms?
Are you sure the noise isn't internal?

I'd go with a bearing on its way out.
Take a very long screw driver and touch the working end to several places all around the alternator (engine running of course), the other end to your ear and I'll bet you find the source.
One other thing, if the bearings start to go out the alternator pulley will begin to walk and eat into you aluminum case, which is not good. |

Not internal
Not rubbing.

Those bearings on the carb arms I picked up from somewheres on the great internet. If I can find the order I'll let you know. _________________ Turbo 2276 MS3X build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=673125

Has it always wined or has it recently started?
Mine began wining after I installed a welded and balanced fan, it sounds similar buy not as bad as yours. I don't know what brand the fan was, I bought it from the local VW shop. I know it is not rubbing, the sound is different.
I have been thinking about swapping it out however it has not been a priority. _________________ 1957 Oval rag

Its a welded and balanced fan I got from CIP1 way back when, when I put together my gofast engine. Its always whined, I'm just now trying to figure out if I can make it quieter. _________________ Turbo 2276 MS3X build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=673125

something contacting the armature? or fan? I had one wine a bit when I got it new. the end cap screws were not tight and the armature was lightly tuching somethen probably the plastic/cardboard/ fenalic insulators on the stayture. I recentered the end cap and tightened the screws. |

My welded fan makes a strange sound as well. Between a whine and something caught in bicycle spokes noise. I've had the fan in and out several times and I'm still stumped. Fwiw I'm running a traditional belt/ import alternator/ welded fan. My next step will be to set the fan and shroud on an engine on my stand, and spin it with a 110v motor. It'll probably be easier to figure out without all of the engine noise _________________ modok wrote:

Talking John @ ACN, he says its a fan spacing issue. I'll put it apart tonight and see what it is.
So...what do I shim the fan with? _________________ Turbo 2276 MS3X build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=673125

Pulley and fan shims. Do you have the backing plate on correctly? |

In the 80's some of the local guys would drill their shrouds, making that sound. Reminds me of a cazoo. |
