Has anyone done this? I have a bunch that I bought for my sandblaster and wanted to try it in the tumbler before buying media.
TIA. |

Unsure. Should work to get rust off and be similar to any 80 grit silicon carbide media.
For my sandblasting I source fine grade sand contractor grade from Quickrete. It is sold at one of my lumber yards locally. It is closer to 150 grit. and very consistent. Flows through a finer nozzle so I can be more efficient with it. |

I would be worried about the play sand having a lot of chlorides/salts in them, and then you will be blasting the chlorides right into the steel. _________________ 1967 Class 5

No.....playsand is also called "washed" sand. Its no different in chemical composition to sand dedicated to abrasive work except that its not a very uniform size grade. It allows a wider range of aggregate size.
Also you cannot blast sodium into steel. It does not work that way. But....if it did have sodium chloride in it it could surface rust but thats not a big deal to fix.
The biggest problem with playsand using a sandblaster is constant clogging. Ray |

I would disagree about chlorides being imbedded into the substrate.
In the coating industry, industrial, it is common knowledge that chlorides can be imbedded into a substrate, it is the reason that we water wash anything being coated prior to it being grit blasted.
I'm not familiar with playsand, as we never use any kind of actual "sand" _________________ 1967 Class 5
