Wait, what kind of clips? If you mean the plastic thimbles, those go on first. If you mean the metal speed nut clips, those go on AFTER you put on the emblem, from below the hood. _________________ Andy T.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

I cut the ends off of my plastic clips/retainers so that I could fit the emblem more tightly.
It does bother me that it didn't fit well initially. If you come up with a more elegant fix, please share. I think I am going to just press some dum-dum putty over mine. I just hadn't thought about doing that yet. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

The inserts are placed in the HOOD holes..
The emblem is then pressed into the inserts.
If the holes have excess paint thickness it can squeeze the inserts too tight not allowing the emblem to seat.
You would need to gently remove some paint from the hood holes..

I removed paint before installing the emblem.
It was quite difficult insert plastic clips into emblem pins.
I had to use some wd40 and a rubber hummer so I think that should be impossible for me to place the clips on the hood and then the emblem. _________________ LOOKING FOR 62 ENGINE WITH NUMBER FROM 6.904.xxx TO 6.915.xxx

Bingo!
After a paint job, the holes are quite a bit smaller from the primer and paint. I bought a cone shaped sanding disc for my Dremel to gently remove all the excess paint from all the molding holes on the body. In a few places, I went to metal but I simply used a small paint brush and hand painted those spots with the car paint, let it dry and then slipped in the clips and or rubber holders. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

UPDATE : I just tried with wolkswagenut advice and now emblem fits better.
Not perfect , perhaps for the damaged pin, but I'm quite satisfied
