I removed my noisey speedo from my 1968 Bug. Tore it down, cleaned and greased everything inside (worm gears). I reassembled it ever so lovingly only to have the needle not move. I attached a speedo cable to a drill and spun it... Odometer works just fine, but no movement from the needle. I can rotate the needle by hand and moves freely, no binding. Any ideas? I seems like the rotating magnet isn't close enough to the cup, but I couldn't see any adjustments for it. Please Help!!!

I've taken the speedo apart a few more times trying to figure out what i did wrong. After many attempts, still no needle movement. Even after much research into the matter I can't figure out how a magnet is able to move an aluminum cup. Doesn't make an ounce of sense.

I think there should be a magnet on the cup too. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

I wouldent waste $ or thyme on building a small motor. build it big so it dosent have to work hard.remember it's only as fast as your foot alows it to be unless you build a small turd then it just stinks as it squishes up through your toes when you step on it. |

I figured out my issue.... Some how my need ended up on the wrong side of the needle stop causing the clock spring to be way too tight. After fixing that, everything works as it should.

You've already solved the problem but the magnet influences the aluminum cup through eddy currents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BeFoz3Ypo4&spfreload=10 |
