I not using my Ignition switch (long, funny story) And I'm cleaning up my wiring and I've noticed this Black with Yellow stripe wire going from the ign. switch to the headlight switch... It's listed as "X" on the wiring diagrams....

Is this a power wire or a switched power or something else my feeble mind can't comprehend?????

Thanks for reading and your thoughtful and insightful answers.....................

What the X wire does..only supplies power when the key is in the ON position. When the key switch is in the START position the X wire has no power on it. The 'purpose' of the X wire is cut off power 'robbing' circuits when the car tries to start. Yet 'restore' power when the key switch goes back to ON.

thank you very much -- -- without an ignition switch I had no way of checking -- -- so basically it kills the headlights when you hit the starter (I'm thinking??)

I didn't realize it kills power when you start.

I know it kills power to the headlights when you switch the key off. The running lights stay on, but the headlights turn off. The "X" circuit was added about 1970; prior to that, the headlights are on whenever the light switch is on.

I rewired my 1969 (which did not have the "X" circuit) with a light switch from a later car that had the "X" terminal. That was just for the feature to turn off the headlights when the ignition is turned off. Whenever it's foggy or dark driving to work in the morning, I turn the headlights on, but by the time I get to work, it's light enough that sometimes I forget. Then the lights stay on all day while parked at work, then the battery is dead. With the "X" circuit, the headlights turn off automatically, and even with the running lights on all day, there's still enough juice to get the car started at the end of the day.
