According to the reverse side of the title card (featuring the red Volkswagen Corrado 16V – K 250 RVV), the rules for playing Top Trumps are as follows:

Any number of people can play. Shuffle and deal all the cards face down. It doesn’t matter if some players have more cards than others. Each player holds their cards so that they can see the top card only.

The player to the dealer’s left starts by reading out an item from the top card (e.g. weight 30 tonnes). The other players then read out the same item. The one with the highest value wins and places all the top cards including their own to the bottom of their pile. It is then their turn again to choose an item from the next card.

If 2 or more cards share the top value for that particular subject then all the cards are placed in the middle and the same player chooses again from the next card. The winner of the hand takes the cards in the middle as well.

The person with all the cards at the end is the winner.

The plastic card-box is damaged, but ALL of the cards (100 x 63 mm or 3•94 x 2•48 inches in size) which have NEVER been used, appear to be in pristine, as-new condition. There is no information about the number of cards which should be contained in the card box, so I do not know for sure whether any are missing. In addition to the title-card (with rules for play on the reverse side), Super Top Trumps Gift Card and Waddington’s combined address, copyright & reference card, there are thirty different Volkswagen car & van playing-cards in the card-box, as follows:
