Has anyone done their own custom shock mounts? I just notched my spring plates and got some new shocks that will not fit in the stock location. I am hoping to mount the new shocks out closer to the wheel.

Mine was half finished when I bought it. No upper mounts, lower mounts where just the stock ones cut off and welded back on the top of the trailing arms. After my first real run with the engine working properly that mount tore itself off the trailing arm so I re-did the one on that side. The U shaped bracket is just 5/8ths bar welded on as a reinforcement since the back of my trailing arm boxing also started to rip off with the old shock mount.
Upper mount I don't have a great picture of but its just a length of 2x1/4" steel bar bent into a U shape and welded over a tube.

One thing to note about shock mounts.
The shock mount bolts should be parallel with the IRS pivot bolt. _________________ Richard

I think I have my rear suspension worked out now, or at least I have a couple of Ideas. I will post pictures of what I end up doing.
Another question... has anyone tried extending ball joint front trailing arms? I have seen extended KP trailing arms for sale but nothing for ball joint. I did know one old timer that built his own, and I know that everyone prefers the KP over ball joints, I am just curious. _________________ my build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5953836#5953836 |
