|
|
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone every experience pitting on the rocker arm faces, that contact the lash cap on Scat 1.4 rocker arms?
I installed the set of lash caps that came with the Scat 1.4 kit, and after approximately 10 miles of engine break-in, I adjust the valves, and I found one of the lash caps 'concaved' and a few others badly pitted. The rockers were pitted as well.
I'm running DRD L6 heads with their valve springs and chromoly push rods. Clearance was set to 0 loose.
Any thoughts or suggestions? |

Aren't SCAT ratio rockers heat treated on their tips? Is the metal a different color there? If not, maybe they skipped treatment. |

did you use any moly cam lube inbetween the lash cap&the rocker foot? do you have enough oil supply to them? the oe oiling is just a spirt&squirt at best.also is the geo right? |

Geometry is correct, and I'm using Valvoline VR1 oil.
I would assume that there is enough oil, as when I take off the valve cover, everything is oily.
I tried capturing a picture of the damage, but is it not coming out clear. |

You check coil bind, max lift and valve to piston clearance? |

Hi Jason,
Yes, coil bind, valve clearance has all been checked at assembly. |

If they show no signs of being heat treated, and have rapid wear in 10 miles...... call Scat and explain the situation.
Screw-ups do happen, I'm sure 75% of the complaints they get are stupid baloney from people that don't know what's going on, but if there is a real problem you should tell them, and they might even give you another set. |

you can also do a file test. as for the vr1......so you didnt use moly on them.just because there is oil in the area dosent mean it's getting where it needs to be when it needs to be there. |

Here's a photo of my Scat 1.4 rockers for comparison and you can see the flame-hardened tips:

I just wasn't sure if I should recommend the 1/3 race cam, the 1/2 race cam, or the 5/8 race cam instead...guess it depends on how much of the race he wants to lead???

next question....do they say scat on them like the ones neil posted there are many out there that look similar but arnt. I bought a set of the look alikes and found all kinds of shit not right including not heatreeted, tips not square to the shaft&more. I fied them and heatreeted them and have around 35000 miles on them. with out the fix they went about 100 miles.Ive since bought another set , reworked them and they have about 75000 miles. |

Hi Neil,
Yes mine do say SCAT on the rockers and are 'blued' on the ends of the rocker. They look very similar to yours.
I'm thinking that the lash caps are the root cause of this issue. I spoke with SCAT and I'll be sending them the lash caps for them to analyze.
When your rockers are installed and adjusted on your engine, approximately how many threads are exposed on adjusting screw? |

As long as they are blued on the ends, they should be okay. The blued look means they were flame hardened, a needed process to make them last. _________________ 1973 Karmann Ghia

Usually 2-3 threads are exposed outside the nut:

I read the Scat lash caps were soft. I read it on here but can't remember where. |

I've used a set of Scat lash caps for ~10 years with no issues. Then last week, one broke in half on my first drag race of the season:
