Hi Samba Elites,

I have a rail buggy that has a stock 1971 VW motor, dual port, single carb setup. (nothing major)

My problem is, I've gone through 3 fuel pumps in a year. The first fuel pump that petered out was the fuel pump that came on the motor in '71. The last two fuel pumps were the after market fuel pumps that I purchased off the internet. Each pump went out about 3-4 months of each other.

F.Y.I, when it came to the two aftermarket fuel pumps, I used grease from a grease gun to fill the cavity of the underneath of the fuel pump.

Has anyone else had this problem, burning up fuel pumps so quickly? And if so, what did you do to correct the problem?

As of right now, I don't trust driving the rail buggy long distances on major roadways. So any help would be great.

Thank you for any help, Matt

Are you using proper pushrod for the pumps you are getting... Alternator style pumps require short pushrod (4 inch), old style pump for use with generator require long pushrod (4-1/4 inch)...

Dale, I'm still using the generator, so I will check the size of push rod.

Thanks

You can tell which style pump you have by where the bottom flange (the one you greased) either pertrudes pat the bottom of the pump or is receded into the pump.

That is...
Whether the actuating lever protrudes past the bottom flange of the pump body.

I had two repro pumps fail in as many weeks. Reading on the web I have discovered that the quality of repro pumps these days isn't all that. So I opted for a Facet Posi-Flo 60104 electric pump fitted under the fuel tank with a cut off relay.
