Yes.

With regard to just the mechanical parts first:

The engine cases except for some very minor casting differences that make no difference at all......the engine cases are identical.

The piston rods, crank, bearings and oil pump are identical.
The cylinders are identical.
The pistons themselves.....are different.
The heads are very different. Different plug angle, the 914 valves are 42mm x 36mm the bus are 39mm x 33mm
The cam is totally different.

The fan is the same except for timing marks. The cooling manifold is largely the same except for the timing mark hole. The alternator is the same.

Because the 914 is mid engine and has different plug angles......most of the sheet metal and the heat exchangers are different.

Now.....if you have a 914, have a 1.7 or 1.8L case...and/or have all of the sheet metal etc from those engines. ....and have access to the crank and rods from a bus 2.0.....you can buy new 2.0 repro heads on new castings from HAM inc......not cheap but actually better than stock 914 2.0 heads........and you can build a 2.0 914 engine.

Rarely do you see such a complete and helpful response to an open ended question like this!

Cheers to Ray for the super detailed response.

Oil dipstick and filler are different. Early T2 had dual Solex carbs stock while ALL US 914 were FI. The carb and FI cams and distributors were different too. The 914 had FI trigger in distributor. Since T2 were lower compression (dished pistons) hence they produced less HP. And of course the heat exchangers and engine hangers were different since engines pointed in different directions. You'll see the boss for a mechanical fuel pump too on 914 engines which was never used since FI took a high pressure fuel pump.
