Hi Everyone, just registered for the forum but I've been digging through the threads for a while now. I bought my first Super Beetle last week so the fun begins!
Right off the bat, I know I have a decent list of items:
-driver's door (needs latch and possibly adjustment for gaps)
-speedo cable (connected at gauge but not at wheel)
-door window rubber and trim
-get blinkers working (were working until I opened the dash to check the speedo cable )
-possibly customize dash and door panels (for easier access in future projects)
Once these are out of the way, I'd like to build up some type of autocross/spirited street ride. The car came with a disassembled 2165cc (?) engine so at some point I would like to build and install that. From the seller, this is the larger engine setup:
-line bored this block 20 over
-78mm crank counterweighted
-94mm "b" Pistons
-engle 120 cam with straight cut gears,
-44mm intake valve and 37mm exhaust valves ported polished heads
-lightened flywheel
-dual HPMX 44 carbs (currently installed on 1600cc engine in car)
I have a lot of questions regarding assembling the engine so please post up and tips and tricks. I have a 2001 Subaru RS that has been my project for a long time and this Super Beetle will now be taking its place as my project car.
I also am curious the best way to go about larger rims/tires. From what I've read, I am leaning towards Porsche turbo twists but I don't fully understand the options for converting to the 5 x 130 pattern. In the process I would also like to convert to disk brakes, not because my current drum setup is inadequate but I would like to future-proof the car for further upgrades. Any input on disk brake conversions (944?) or switching to Porsche lug pattern would also be greatly appreciated,
Here are some pictures, a lot of updates to come in the near future.
