I hate to admit defeat, but after a week trying to sort the electrics on my 1972 VW181 (Trekker) I need help.
I have replaced bad wiring and fitted a new fusebox, but I still have the problem I originally started with ;
sidelights work perfectly but whenever I switch to headlights, the tail lights go out, and probably the fronts ?
.....any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Ron.

Hi Ron,
Sorry to hear you are having troubles. Maybe we can help out. I'm guessing by the photo that your front turn signals have a single bulb with a single filament, that your headlamps have a second "city light" in them, and that your light switch is a rotary switch rather than a push-pull knob. Is that correct? |

Hello, and thanks for the reply.
No, my 181 has the push/pull switch....and the side lights are incorporated within the headlight, as is usual here in the UK.
I have tried tracing all the wiring - but it has been rewired in many places with plain black cable, so that doesn't help.
Pulling the switch to headlights just knocks off the sidelight circuit that includes the rear lights.
My guess it is the wiring to the switch is at fault....and I'm off to buy a multimeter today, to see if that helps.
Cheers, Ron. |

Eventually, after retracing the wiring and double checking the connections, I found two misplaced connections - swapped them over, and 'voila' I have lights !
Thanks for checking in......and Speedy Jim.
