Help deciding what to buy: first-time VW owner '82 Westys

I have an '82 AC. mountain climbing there, especially in summer will be slow. I'd run the appropriate weight oil for the ambient temps. it does help keep it cooler if you end up on the dry side during the summer, for example.

I'd get the diesel (having never driven one) all things being equal between the two, just for the ability to upgrade, and possibly get better milage.

Absolutely No reason to throw out the '87 - it's the other MY's that are not proper.
