Taking my '65 down to bare metal the old fashioned way - grinders, sanders, Dremel etc. Want to be sure I'm being safe with this - my wife asked about lead paint and my answer was "hmmm I have no idea"

So my question is, while I've got this crap flying around me and in the air what are the must's of safety. I presume an air respirator, goggles, heavy duty gloves.

There is some lead in "old" auto paints. The reds, yellows and oranges have the highest and may have chromates as well.

Use of a decent particulate respirator, cover sweaty skin, goggles. You dont need a forced air respirator...but a decent high end particulate or use basic organic vapor cartridges with the extra outer filter.

One thing to think about is where the dust is going. If you are only doing one car...and the dust goes out on the yard and you water that in with the sprinkler, or sweep up dust or rinse it down....its not going to put enough lead into the yard to contaminate your property by any means. It was take doing many cars on your property over time to make a measurable difference.

The risk....as noted in the EPA article link below....is not doing anything with the dust...and tracking it into your house. Use the garden hose and rinse the dust into the edge of the grass at regular intervals.

Cover up the shelves and work benches in your garage if you do this indoors...with cheap plastic so that you dont infest the whole place with lead bearing dust that will constantly be contaminating you for years to come.

Great answer.

I would add that if you are doing this in a household garage that will house other items, like foodstuffs, luggage, camping stuff, etc.... place all that stuff in a large shelf and then screen the whole thing in heavy plastic, leaving an overlapping slit or two for access. The dust you'll make is extremely fine and it will get into EVERYTHING.
