Hi, ive been collecting vw's for many years. Since i was about 14. Ever since i have collected a large pile of parts. Until today these have all been dorment in my garage.
So 6 months ago i decides to build myself something with all that.
In 2007 i rescued a rotten zwitter from a farm not that far from where i live. The farmer had stored the vw in a shed but over time that shed collapsed and the vw was buried. He ownes a lot more stuff but didnt want to part from it.
The only thing he wanted to give up was that split. He's still alive as we speak (propably 93 years old).
Since i dont make a million dollars a year i wanne keep this restauration cheap. Some might hate what im doing, some might love the fact im saving a split. What i really want is a car according to my taste ... a drivers car; not something to put in my living room.
When i got time i will post my progress. Im not hasty so dont expect a post every day with great progress. |

Thank you. |
Worked an hour on that .
Just to find out google photos dont link the jpg file ...
Had to resort back to picasa web.
While uploading my pics onto thesamba i noticed other people hauling wrecks out of the bush. Man i tought i had a long journey . People even salvage burned out ones.
Just gave me some hope
Wanne know how it looked?
Like this. Beam of the shed fell right in the middle of the roof and on the split window section.

Ok, got some more work done. Two floorhalfs are out of the donor chassis, some other parts stripped of it as well.
Now reguiding and cleaning tubes inside the chassis.
No pain no gain
Leftover chassis ... sorry for my shakyness
Always nice as spare parts to be laying around
Nice 1.1mm thick floorpans. No repro 0.6mm for this baby
Iron oxide anyone?
Diffence in pre 63 and after 63 shift rods
Top appears to be almost the same, except the notch
Cleaned and ready to open it up
Man am i glad i opened that chassis ... look at the dirt
Titanic grade stuff
Dear lord
A bit of dirt came out LOL
Once you clean out the dirt its really really good WINNING
Propably last pic of the day
Well im of to cleaning the chassis, reguiding the tubes and perhaps install the shift rod.
Well see. |

Ok ... so im deeeep down in parts land now.
Selling off a few of my parts that were laying around in my garage, i also got a chance of looking at different types of gearboxes. The tnnel is still open and i wanne be sure everything in my tunnel works 100% the way i want it.
I got 3 scenarios to go with.
1 I re-install the pre 10/52 hockeypuck gearbox nosecone setup (missing back plate for the rubber)
2 I convert the chassis to a fixed early 53 gearbox mount using the same original gearbox (got a correct nosecone and rubber)
3 I convert the chassis to a fixed early 53 gearbox mount but i use a much younger box. (got that as well)
I am very hesitant of option 3. I wanne keep it original. Having the original split case gearbox and not installing it is bunkers. But on the other hand a younger box drives more pleasant. Still 90% of me says nooooo.
So im very much in doubt between option 1 and 2.
Do i weld a fixed early mount? Or do I use the hockey puck?
They are both original. But wich one is best? Are there pro's and contra's? |

I just took delivery of a sight unseen 1960 beetle and this is literally the only thing I could say the whole time. The car was rougher than I thought but all the little bits and pieces no one ever has added up to a true Friedburger "mint" scenario. I say that all the time!
With regards to the transmission- are you planning on running the 25hp? If you are, you might want to consider the gearing in the different transmissions and what will work best with your power plant. Like you said, its going to be a driver- not a showpiece. A transmission mount is easy to change back if you ever do a concours restoration on it. I say go with the later transmission for driving comfort and enjoyment. Then again, I am keeping the non synchro 1st split case in my '60 because I am too lazy to swap them out and it only has 68k miles on it!
Just my $0.02
Looking forward to seeing this progress!

The fact i got family in Burbank CA, Santa Ana CA, Pierre SD, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, Playa del Carmen Mexico, Appleton Wisconsin, Belleville, Ontario Canada does tend to leave you more or less M Erican.
When I say things to people back home for instance ... Billy Mays here with another great product. People ask me "who's Billy Mays ......
Im the only one in miles with a flathead V8 in his garage. Heck im the only one who can convert mph to kmh while driving.
So yeah, being a Roadkill fan (up until episode 44) "MINT" gets used often. Also "that ll buff out" and "take the hood" off .
So to the matter of tranny mount. While driving home i was thinking welding on a later style mount would be the best option. Im not really planning on driving the stock 25hp. I am planning on making that 25hp running, but thats about it.
My plans are more or less vintage speed. A fast split. Youll see. |

Nice to see you got started on it
I noticed that someone at the barn already executed a top-chop for that low-'n-fast vintage speed look
I would personally go for the newer transmission, since you want it to be a driver's car, and the older gearbox is double clutch, more work for the driver.
And also.... at VW shows and such nobody would get flat on their back to admire your gearbox underneath your car .... that would be something!
Only when it comes to selling it could make some price difference to have the matching numbers gearbox in the car, but then the rest of the car probably won't be 100% correct either, so if it were me I wouldn't loose sleep over a newer gear box in the car, while keeping the original around to include in a future sale of the car.
Good luck, and have fun at your project, I'll be following this thread for sure! _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

I have two modified bugs 63+66 ; I like cars I can enjoy and not worry about original parts breaking down . If you do use this old double clutch tranny are you going to be able to find parts if it breaks down on your way to a show or off for a visit . _________________ 63 two fold rag

Find yourself this bus part.
Fits to your original split floor and fits to post 1952 semi synchronised gearboxes.

Hi, so where am i now. Small update. Didnt have that much time to work on the car. Had to do a lot of chores. Being married right .
I deciced to go with the original gearbox. I drove crashboxes before and im not that much a crappy driver so i dont mind. Also decided NOT to weld on the tunnel. Its pristine so i wanne keep it that way. I do have the tunnel mount.
I allready cleaned up 80% of the box. Man there was a LOT of gunk on that thing. Also made 3 prototypes of brakedrumpullers. One works great. The other 2 are reduced to trash.
This one works superb.
First attempt ... broke this one in 1 minute .
Did get the original vw nose part for my gearbox. With a NOS rubber and the closingbrace for it. Nosepart doenst fit yet, i have to get it to a machineshop to get a little piece grinded off. There seems to be a difference in them (i got a 49 piece, it doenst fit a nov 52 box)
An hour ago i sandblasted some of the parts to put the box back together once my part is grinded.
Also looking to make a copy of that NOS rubber i got. If i manage to make a good reproduction of it, im thinking of offering it on classifieds. Dont know if anyone is interested in that. Give a shout out what you think. |
