I'm talking about this color:
I'd like to replace them on my sofabed, but I can't find it with WW, Günzl and all the other go-to places.
Any idea where to get this material and what it is called? Does it come with a color code or something? |

I think you are calling it the right thing. Good luck with finding a perfect match. It's out there but not at the usual retail shops. I bought some here on the classifieds a while back. It is a perfect match but it is great quality and a bit expensive. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

I call it ugly and uncomfortable. IMHO As much of a stock person as I am I would not replace that with stock. I had a '67 split camper and a '72 bay, both with that stuff. Blah.. _________________ "You're either on the bus, or you're off the bus." ~kk

When I called sew fine they said they don't carry the replacement mustard vinyl just other vinyls that look somewhat similar. _________________ Click to view image

Wow I'm quite surprised by all that negative opinion towards that mustard vinyl. I
I agree it's not the best material of all, but screw it, I kinda like it. At least you can wipe it clean after your next psychedelic hippie orgy
But seriously, thanks for the links to the classifieds. I'm quite happy to see that at least a few people want to keep the vinyl mustard alive |

I love the mustard vinyl. I throw a blanket down to sleep on and the fact that you can wipe it down is key. Personally I think the color grows on you.
The original vinyl is thicker than what you can find at Joann's fabric etc.
sew fine isn't an exact match.
Good luck and if you find some, post it on here. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

I found a swatch at a local shop called "ferrari gold" it is darn near an exact match with the yellow but none of the brown "marble" effect that some seats seem to have. |

don't get me wrong, If I had a bus with nice original vinyl I would love it and rock it. I just don't think that I would replace it with vinyl if I was redoing it. I remember many hours as a child sweating on that back bench riding down the road in August.. Or someone would toss a blanket over it to reduce the sticky, but then it was covered and you could not see it anyway. I would use a mustard indoor/outdoor fabric to retain the OG flavor, it has easy cleanup, and would increase comfort for passengers. |

This was advertised in the Samba Classifieds in June of 2012:
Mustard Yellow Vinyl for Westy Campers. Price $12/LF
These people are on the Westside in Portland, Oregon, near me, but I never contacted them.

Well I have finally gotten around to replace the upholstery.
So let's have a closer look at it. As mentioned I've ordered with NLAA and they delivered in a timely manner from Great Britain to Germany.
First impression of the fabric was really good. Thick material with the exact look and feel as the poriginal, including the grain. In the picture above I have put the delivered fabric in comparison with the original fabric.
My Bench from below. The new fabric comes with buttons attached so all you need to do is remove the old one and pop the new fabric on... well at least in theory that sounds easy.
Foam still looking good after 44 years.
Let's have a closer look at the outlines of this reproduction.
The following two pictures shows the differences between original and original
New on top, original below. Everything looks fine. However the area around the half-circles for the bench handles is not quite identical.
Original on top, new below. Here we can see a bit better how the half circles are cut out differently.
It took me quite a while to get the new fabric on. I was doing it by myself and quite quickly I realized, that there is a lot of tension on the fabric when you try to attach it.
First two corners work well at first, but you won't be able to apply the last two corners. It helps a little bit to strech the fabric at first.
What worked quite well for me in the end was the following: I used stand on the bench so the foam around the corners was compressed by my body weight, this made it easier to wrap the fabric around the corners.
When you lifted your weight off the bench, everything else kinda fell into their places.
Whenever you finished one corner it was helpfull to attach a few of the buttons, so this corner was fixed. Proceed in this way around all corners.
hesistate relocating the buttons that are screwed into the bench. The fabric-side buttons have to match the bench. even if you need a lot of force to actually make them do so.
For me this worked for all but two buttons which I had to relocate, but I did so in the very end.
That's what it looked like shortly before I was finished:
Once the bench was put back into its place, it's impossible to see a difference.
So the verdict:
It is a very well made reproduction. Looks and feels like the original one and fits well enough with the original parts. Just take your time when applying the fabric and make sure to compress the foam.
Took me around 90 minutes to complete the whole task. |

Thanks for the write up on these. They look great. I don't see the difference in the small cut outs on the Westy bed, look the same to me. I'm going to look into shipping on this. Looks like a decent deal if they fit well. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

Well I decided to order a set of the mustard covers as well. Super fast shipping and great original looking vinyl. This company NLAVW has a lot of hard to find reproductions and they look to be of great quality.
I ordered the set for a 71 Westy. I have only one one piece on so far. It's the back rest to the buddy jump seat behind the driver. Well that piece is not a good fitting piece. I had to make a new piece of thicker foam because this cover is made too deep for the stock 1 inch foam. Looks pretty baggy with stock foam under it. Looks pillowy with 2 inch foam under it now but better than the baggy look. I am going to write the company and let then know but thought I'd post my findings here in case anyone else is considering this route.
They are quality seat covers and I'm hoping the rest fit better. I'll report back after I get more of the covers on. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

OK, I give up. What does NLAVW stand for, and how can it/they be contacted?
My bad, third time through I found the link. |
