So the Darkside called & they seemed like nice guys.
This may be a bit long......S o r r y.
Thanks to The Samba & its members..Aaron, Pedro, John J., Tram & others as this moves along.
I have owned this car from Nov. 1986. Dragged it out of a wrecking yard in North Carolina. It ran & needed some work. In March 1987 on a dare from a car show promoter I started work in January (after work hours) and did the body & paint & a stitched the whole interior.

302 plastic pink flamingos. Fun WOW.
Drove the car around for the summer then took the motor & trans out, painted all the underneath purple, new brakes, tie rod ends, ball joints & built a brand new motor, case & all. 2074cc dual 44 webers. cut the floor & built a new engine cover.
Got ready to go to California & do the Caravan, Bakersfield & Sacramento shows. 3 weeks in a car with my girlfriend of a year (yes we are still together) radio died the day we left.

I think I remember seeing that car in VW Trends. Man that was a long time ago. Laughing Didn't it make the cover? Back in those days I was a VWT subscriber, as they were the only magazine that actually showed type 3s. Cool

Yeah it was in VW Trends & it was a long time ago.
The trip to California was 1990 and once in awhile it seems like yesterday.
I have been dragging my feet on this post, so I guess now is as good as ever

.

So I have been working on the car in bits and pieces, cut the hood and smoothed the body line out. Bug headlights, smooth the hatch.

.

I was trying to find the right look for this car, and was not finding it. So I would throw the cover back on & leave it for another day.

So with a little help from The Samba & its members, I dug in deep.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Dropped the floor, I built a dolly to roll and lift the floor to work on it

.

I do not have a driveway and parking is a bit of a premium, so the cart allowed me to roll it out and in to work on it. I jacked the car up as far as I could and used some pipe stands for support

.

Way back l had painted the floor purple and now with the floor out I got to repaint it again. This time it is much easier

So we need to get rid of the purple and replace with something a bit more lasting

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
.

Since I live in the big city, painting the whole floor at once would upset the neighbors, I painted it in something that would last

The interior side of the floor has bed liner & sound deadner on it. The tunnel I wanted painted.

Thanks Pedro, your Razor build is great inspiration.

With the floor work done, the body work begins. I am very fortunate to have a good car to work with. The heater channels are in great shape and after some wire brush work, new primer and some paint.

Good to see you’re reviving this car. Looks to be pretty solid to begin with which is always a good thing! Look forward to reading your updates.

Yes I am fortunate to have a great car to work with.

The front inner fender to cowl panel has these welds on both sides. No other signs of welding on the cowl panel or inner fenders.

So as I said earlier, I painted the purple everywhere, the paint stood up well in the wheel wells, the trip to California and back only netted out a few stone chips.

This project is further along than the post would show. I have been busy on the car and spare moments are for the car and this post has been delayed. I will try to update more frequently.

That's a factory weld, unless you did something there years ago.
The inners look really good for the age of the paint. What did you use way back when?

So with the floor all done, suspension painted, put the floor back on the body

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I sprayed some paint where the body and suspension meet to save some masking and get the car back together.
This picture is the first time the car had been on the ground in more than 25 years. This also was the hottest day of the year to put the two parts back together.

So since the post was removed for the big window look, I needed to put posts back in. Thanks Joel (bookooz)

Now I love panel vans, and this is going that way. Pedro sent me templates to fit my posts in. Now I would have thought a paper template would arrive in the mail, but if you have with dealt Pedro you know he is all in. So a set of Patron Powered Pedro Perfect Practice Plywood Panels arrived in the mail.

Then the real ones arrived (after the plywood fitting )

Sorry Bob, just noticed your question. I had used Diamont B /C for the purple. The pink was Miracrly acrylic enamel with Diamont clear. The wheel wells were pink when I painted the whole car.

I took panels off one at a time and brought them to work. Strip off the paint and prime in high build.

Time for a road trip to the shop to finish the welding & prime the rest of the car. I finished the body work & decided to spray the blue on now while I have the shop access.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

With the blue on the windshield can get installed, we have a glass shop next door, they offered to install so I took advantage of the offer. Reload the car and head back home.

I was fortunate to have the winning bid from the east coast invasion for a John Jaranson drawing. John is the guy to take your ideas and put them on paper. After a few different versions I found this to be the one. Thanks again John Applause

Thanks for the kind words. 69 notch, I did this about 20 plus years ago, I have 18 hours in cutting and welding on the hood including painting inside and out. I have been trying to do subtle changes to the car
