I have seen those numbers on there but didn't know what they were for.
For Buses there is often an actual date like 10/53 stamped into the casting, I guess Bugs don't have that?
Examples
( Sorry for gross Bus content here ) |
The bus steering boxes were made by ZF. The Bug boxes were either made by VW or a different vendor so that would account for the differences in how they were date coded. _________________ Chris

... yes, I have finally found the date coding on the left side of the steering box (driver side). It can be seen by looking under the fender, the side where the horn is... seems my '54 has a date coded 1949 box in it... _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I'm looking at this steering box for my July 51 beetle. Is this a split beetle box? Is the 1053 to the right of the VW logo in the first photo a date code? Is an October 1953 box the same as for a July 51 car?
Cheers,
Dave |

Measure the lower shaft dia, it should be 22 mm. If 28 mm then later version. The filling plug head looks odd, should be hexaconal.
I'm quite sure the stamp 1053 is an inspection stamp, not a date code. _________________ Mika
