Thanks a lot
Before I could place the body onto the frame I built I needed to remove the leftovers of the crossmembers and the firewall
drilled/sawzalled out
Next step was to repair the left inner structur of the b pillar/quarter panel
cut out all the rotten metal
built a repair panel
And welded it into place
I won't grind the welds right away because of one of my neighbours(veeerrryyy special neighbour) and due to the rest periods of Munich. I'm only allowed to make noise between 8-12am and 3-6pm.
Yeah... and due to that I'm doing this all at once somewhere outside after the welding is finished. |

Next step was to repair the A pillars.
At first, I planned to use the very cheap after market A pillar pieces.
But even for a project like that I didnt have the heart to weld in those pieces of crap.
I went with the ones from Hookeys Panel Shop. Very very nice quality for a reasonable price.
Hookeys A pillar vs cheap after market piece (black)
First i drilled out the door hinge screws to remove the hinge
removed outer skin
whole pillar cut out
aligned, then welded (forgot to tak picture)
Same for the otherside
Now i can aligne the door gaps and weld the a pillar to the heater channel.

Next was the left inner rear wheel well.
Everything missing in this picture rusted away. Nothing was cut out to this point
Made first cut for the wheel well reinforcement repair panel
tacked in
completely welded in
rusted out fender nuts replaced with also cheap aftermarket repair panel
needed to make room for the cheap rear bumper hanger repair piece
cut out
engine bay bulkhead corner also was very crusty and needs to be replaced...
removed and cleaned up
repaired rusted out nuts for fender bolts
And finally the bumper hanger
had to fabricate a little piece
finished wheel well

The right wheel well is also finished.
Same procedure as on the left side

Amazing talent

I think that in Germany you can find more and better old vws than in other country .... this is only a challenge _________________ LOOKING FOR 62 ENGINE WITH NUMBER FROM 6.904.xxx TO 6.915.xxx

Exactly In the background of the picture for example is a better candidate for restoration
I made progress on the left front quarter. As it was super rusty everywhere and i dont care about original pressing in this project, I decided to replace the whole quarter with a cheap repro one. It didn't go as smooth as i expected.
I started by removing the front apron... Job done with 2 hard pulls
Then I drilled out all spot welds and unfolded the A pillar seam
removed
original vs repop
The later model bumper mounts will be removed later and the correct will be mounted on the inside
The area where the tank sits on top was also crusty
cut out
bend a panel with my cheap ebay folding machine
welded in place and ground down
Next rust through
cut out
made a patch panel and welded it in
ground down
And finally... the new quarter welded into place

Oh wow, man! That's a parts car in the U.S.! We are pampered over here, it seems. You're doing Gods work, and no vehicle will EVER come close to the amount of sentimentality this car will posses to you. Keep it up, you're putting us all to shame! _________________ It's all a labor of love. |

x2 on this. The European guy's kick our spoiled USA asses when it comes to metal work. We whine about how our engines don't start or run poorly. Then there's the electrical issues we all have here.
While the European guy's methodically go about returning our (perceived junk) to wonderful pieces of art.
To the OP. My hat's off to you sir. You are a craftsman.

Thanks for the compliments
Next was the right quarter panel
I cleaned up the the areas where the spotwelds were hiding, drilled them out and opened the seam to the A pillar.
removed quarter panel compared to repro panel
I blasted and primed all areas which won't be easy to reach after the quarter installation.
Quarter in place!
Replacing the quarters was actually more time consuming as i thought.... work i didn't want to do again in the near future
Make sure to check out my personal blog where I also post progress of my other ongoing projects ... the 089garage

I thought I had seen innovation until I travelled to the Russia and east Europe republics. The folks there who had to live with nothing teach us how amazing we can be. _________________ .ssS! |

Another piece of the puzzle:
I fixed the brake fluid resevoir area without completely removing it!
Rust:
cut out all the rot to the solid metal and treatetd with rust converter
I first repaired the beneath lying panel
...applied weld thru primer
and then the brake fluid resevoir area itself
painted
spare tire well in position
welded

Tremendous work, skill and dedication, Bene.
Why did you use late-style (big bumper) front quarter repro patch panels? Were the early style not available, so that you'll graft in at least the lower sections with the bumper bracket mounts that are inside the spare tire well?

Hey,
Firstly there are no early full quarter panels on the market.
But also if they were, i probably also would have used the ones I did due to budget reasons. This is a low budget project and no period correct restoration(i have other cars for that )
My goal was to bring a car that nobody wanted even as parts car back to life to drive as a rat. Nothing more
Oh and don't worry about the bumper mount itself.
Next update will contain the removement of the late bumper mounts on the outside and the conversion to the old style bumper mount
best regards and thanks for reading
