I have a 1969 912 that came with an early 70's VW 1600 DP engine in it. I recently sold that engine and bought a proper 68' 912 engine that bolted right up to the 901 trans (as expected). The engine was from a guy we found who had a 912 that ended up getting totaled 20 or so years ago. He kept the engine with the plan to put it in a kit car. Regardless, that plan never played out but he maintained the engine well and when we just started it up this weekend, it runs properly and needs a few little things to make it pur. In hindsight, we should have changed out the clutch while the engine was out of the car, but the excitement of fitting the right engine back into the car overshadowed that thought. When pressing the clutch and shifting into any gear, there is a lot of grinding and it never engages (ftw the car drove without issue with the VW engine). We did change out the bearings of the shifter, put in a new clutch cable, and changed out the bearings and clutch spring of the pedal cluster.

1) All that in mind, does it sound like we need to change out the clutch and pressure plate? FTW the prior owner said he had no clutch issues before the accident.

2) Also, given that my 912 had a different engine in it when I bought it, are there any modifications that could have been done to the 901 transmission to accommodate the VW engine that I will need to change back? Thanks.

I know nothing about this but over at the Pelican Porsche BBS, I found these threads which may be helpful:

After looking through those links a little deeper, it looks like every modification needs be done to the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate of the VW engine, not the 901 transmission. That in mind, is it safe to say that I just need a clutch kit and do not need to change anything on the 901 trans?

Is this a type 4 engine you are installing? If so.....Check to make sure you have the correct flywhwel. You should have it. ....typically the differences in the flywheel ring gear and friction face placement were specific to the 901.

Worth checking out either way. Ray

The 912 had a 70s VW 1600 in it. Not sure if it was a type I, II, or III, but it was certainly not a type IV per my grandfather. We sold the VW engine and put in a 68' 912 engine.

THE 68 & 69 912'S USE NO FREE PLAY, THE tHROW OUT BEARING RUNS AGAINST THE PRESSURE PLATE. I know it sounds stupid but those two years are the only ones that do or you won't get enough release to shift without grinding gears. So says the manual. Be sure to buy a German bearing. Have a 69 so I know.
