Hi guys, I'm insulating my van and the ceiling, fiberglass, is my main concern:
Last time it rained I noticed humidity was going through, making the top wet, and the insulation wet as well.
Given the fast that I want to put wood on the ceiling, I am wondering what I can do to waterproof the fiberglass ceiling?
I was thinking of putting some waterproof paper before the insulation?
Any ideas, guys?
PS: The original ceiling had some yellow foam all over covered by the vinyl headliner.

Are you sure the moisture is "getting through"?, or is it just moist interior air condensing on a cold uninsulated surface?
Step 1 is fix all the leaks in the bus so it doesn't get wet inside, window seals, rusty fenderwells, etc...., then insulate the inside of the single layer surfaces, if it doesn't get cold it won't build up condensation like the outside of a chilly beer bottle. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Busdaddy is right sounds like condensation is forming on the inside of the temperature differential. Try using 3m spray 90 rather than spray 77 better quality for heat and humidity |

Yeah i found that the vent windows didn't close correctly and that's probably what creates this humidity. I will use this 3m adhesive thanks for the advice. |

How are you putting wood on the ceiling? I have 1/8in wood panels on the sides held in place by the side window frames, but I'd be concerned about the weight of the wood on the fiberglass. After 40 years these fiberglass tops don't seem to be all that strong weight wise.
Also what did you end up using for insulation? |

I ended up insulating with bubble/aluminium insuation.
Also i cleaned the old glue to add some wood supports glued with construction adhesive. it worked great!
I then installed a bamboo type of ceiling with screws and chrome moldings, came out pretty cool! |

Great job! I was gonna say I had mine painted and the painter said he found some holes that he glassed closed on the inside of the roof. Maybe you should get the outside painted too so it can be sealed up if it needs it. I would be sad to see the wood work get messed up. It looks great and I might copy what you did! _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. I'll put some pics of the outside in my gallery. |
