Just beautiful Mario, it looks like an affordable Porsche and I would imagine affordable parts too! Do you or others know why Germany didn't catch on and make the SP2?

Did Doyle Dane Bernbach do the ads in Brazil too? Many of them have the same look. One or two are translations of English language ones but most of them are unfamiliar to me and would have been great in English. I especially like the one about all the excuses the husband comes up with when his wife asks to drive the VW. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

The advertising agency here in Brazil was called Alcantara Machado, and they worked close with Mr. Bernbach, so you can see some similarity on their work too.
When I get time, I´ll translate you the woman´s ad, the text is SUPERB !
As I graduated from Publicity here, I enjoy A BUNCH having these classic advertising to see !!

Here we can find some ads from the "second-period" VW´s - they were made from 1970 on, when we had the "VW-1500" version, a more powerful & luxurious Beetle.
The "official"! production of the brazilian Beetle finished back in 1986, when they made the "Última Série", a 850 numbered cars for the finish line. Then, seven years later, the former President of Brazil, Mr. Itamar Franco, asked VW to produce the Beetle again - and so they did !!
For 1993 we still had brand-new cars in the VW showrooms with the 1.600 cc. carbureted, air-cooled engine for the three-year in a row final assembly, back in 1996.

Mario,
Do you have any film or video of VW's being produced in the factory in Brazil? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Linda,
Besides using the all mechanicals & the VW badge, the truth is that SP-2´s weren´t produced inside the SBCampo assembly line, but very close, in the Karmann-Ghia factory, a few miles from that.
They were made with another brazilian-styled model, the Karmann-Ghia TC.
I believe that VW of Germany was focused on the water-cooled cars at that time, and they decided not to pay much attention to the beautiful design of the SP-2.
These cars saw very small production, and they were very expensive when new - but they sold quite well, almost ten thousand in a five-year production.

Bill, I´ll do some research on Youtube, I don´t have videos on the assembly line, just some classic TV commercials - these ones I have in my archives.

In Brazil we had a decade of production on this iconic model, from 1962 till 1972. They are very rare nowadays due to few survivor cars, but the make sucess in the car meets. The convertible version is even rarer, with mere 177 units produced only in 1967 thru 1969. We believe that less than a dozen of these original "Verts survived nowadays.

|
|
VW of Brazil was decided to phase out production on the traditional Karmann-Ghia style, so they decided to create a new design: the TC, badged as "Touring Comfort", so the car had four seats, a bigger space for luggage and a great resemblance on the Porsche 911. It used the famous "pancake" aitr-cooled engine, shared with the Variant, TL and SP-1/SP-2 models.
Production started back in 1970 and they stayed on the market until 1976, when the last units rolled off the assembly line.
The TC hasn´t gathered much attention from our classic car market, but as the traditional K-G is getting higher and higher prices, the TC´s more affordable numbers are rising value from the last years.
Enjoy !

Enjoy !!!

Mario,
Thanks so much fo all this great information, and I do hope you are putting the images in the archival photo section of this site as these should be historically preserved.
Can you tell me if Brazil had any relationship with Mexico on the Beetle production?

Linda,
I´m uploading the images and hope that the moderators will copy them to the archival photo session too !!
And there will be more images to come !
About the Beetle production: as far as I know, VW de Mexico had a narrow relationship with VW of Brazil, I see that Brasilias were assembled in CKD form there, and some Kombis too, but the "Vochos" were all mexican - you can notice that our "Fusca" has smaller windows, and they never had electronic fuel injection system, for example.

Another HUGE success for VW of Brazil: the Brasilia model, designed by the same team that made the sporty SP-1/SP-2, this one used a VW Variant shorter and slightly larger wheelbase, the body reminisced the Mini and the large windows gave a bigger sensation of space.
The Brasilia model was an instant success on the brazilian market and sold almost a million cars in a ten-year production run, starting life back in 1973 till 1982. VW of Brazil decided to phase it out with the coming of the VW Gol, another great success too.
A curiosity: the VW Brasilia Four-Door, made for export since 1976 and sold in Brazil only three years later, 1979:
