I'm interested in your engine mount design. Are you planning on any lateral mounts, or just the fore/aft setup. I'm asking 'cause I also have an ALH that's being setup to mount at 15 degrees, and I still have that same upper engine mount that I might use similar to yours. Mine's a 2WD, so that might not be as stable as your Syncro, since your trans mounting is more triangulated.

This is a beautiful build through and through.

Thank you..

Isolating vibration and noise with diesels has been a challenge whether its a boat or a hippy bus. I just happen to know boats and airplanes. I'm just copying the newest pendulum design of the modern Diesel engines. This is somewhat experimental to me as well. I would think an install like mine in a 2WD would require some sort of a torsional link because of the center line of trans mount.

I'm not sure how mine is going to work with the torque of the syncro drive shaft just yet.

Hope this helps...

I'm pretty sure those are heat exchanger panels, but I was going to ask why there were so many in his garage!

Its the IC core from the golf donor car. I figured it was somewhat engineered and sized for the engine..

drj434343 is correct they are titanium heat exchanger plates for a pair of 32 liter caterpillar marine engines. I spent most of a day scrubbing those things clean..

A big mile stone.... Paint..

I decided to take a chance and do it in the shop without a tent. The vanagon has some great places to break up the panels. A nice one is the roof has seams on both ends. This was nice because I could knock out the roof with the jams and no blending.

Yeah boy. Looks great. Don't make it look to good you won't want to drive it. You'll be on the road here shortly. I need to buff mine too but am startung to like the factory orange peel look. Looks much more original then flat glass clear. Just a subtle orange peel like the new audi and vws.

I've been falling behind on the updates..

Here we go... Some of this stuff is not so fun. Taking apart windows and cleaning up 30 years of who knows what.

Sand blasting the frames. This is tedious work, the frames are fragile.

And powder coating a mat black.

It's crazy how dirty and sticky things are.

Tackling the door hardware was a tough decision. As nice and tough the factory vw finish was I chose to redo it. All sand blasted and ready for some powder.

I also keyed all the locks the same. The only ones I didn't do was the gas caps, not yet anyways.

Been thinking the same about door handles and just wondering what is the most durable paint for them.
Powder coating looks great, but is there something out there that is even more durable than powder coat paints or is there one powder coat paint brand more durable than standard paints you find in most powder coating shops?

Your project is looking great by the way, but I think I'm more envious of your shop! (and it's location on an airfield!)
