Well it has been a while since the last update but believe me, we have had some great adventures! I just have done a poor job in documenting them.
Well this weekend we decided to take our twins camping out near Detroit Lake. We had recently picked up a book highlighting hundreds of good free (dispersed) camping areas in Oregon and decided to check out a few that were listed as Drive to Camp as opposed to Pack and Carry which is not that good for the Westy. The directions seemed pretty clear to the area we were headed so armed with our GPS, we headed off Saturday morning.
till next time!

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful…..One of my regrets is that we didn't take our girls camping more than a few times when they were young. I now feel like we cheated them out of part of their childhood birthright. We didn't have a camper then and there always seemed to be 'other things' going on during the weekends. They're grown now with careers of their own. If I ever have grandkids I'm gonna try & make up for it with them.
Wish I had it to do over,

What an amazing site! We were at the Detroit Lake SP campground this wknd. Great weather although your site beat ours by a country mile. Was the book you found the site in called "Camp Free?" |

Another weekend, another adventure. Saturday took us out the beautiful Columbia River Gorge down I84. We stopped in Hood River for coffee and snacks for the kiddos and headed east towards Old Highway 30 in Mosier and Rowena Point.
Weather was overcast and windy! We first stopped at Memaloose Overlook.
From there it was onto the famous Rowena Viewpoint. This view has inspired countless amazing shots of the road and gorge. Mine are not so good
I stayed up top while my wife drove down for me to get some shots of the Westy in action! It was soooo windy up top, my face hurt when she returned.
From there we meandered into The Dalles and took 7 Mile Road back west towards Hood River. The goal was to get off 7 Mile and take gravel roads all the way to Hood River. Worked out for the most part. Got a little lost at times but isn't that the point?
Came across a bike trialhead and saw a Westy. Had to stop and get a pic.
Road going to Hood River
Then Hood River for early dinner and a walk about town. From there we headed back to Portland for another finish to a great adventure.
thanks again

Wow, it has been awhile again since I posted to this thread. We have had some fun this summer but also a lot of work. We painted our house and I fixed some rotted out rafters. Took a lot of weekend work when I should have been having fun! Looking forward to Descend on Bend!
We did get out of the house for a few hours on Saturday and decided to head back to Hood River to go to the farms and take in the changing leaves. When we left Portland, it was a bit rainy but as soon as we came into Hood River, sunny and warm! A bit windy but not bad for HR. A quick stop for coffee and snacks and we headed out to our favorite school playground to let the kids burn off some energy. From there it was out to an apple farm for more snacks. I thought I got some pix there but couldn't find them. Anyway, saw a road that headed up and we took it. It went up with a great view of the valley.
We spent quite a while up there exploring and soaking in the sun.
Headed on and took a great single lane gravel road that headed down. It was a beautiful drive down with great views.
Back on Hwy 35, we decided to head south towards Mt. Hood. Once we finished the slow climb to Hwy 26, we decided to head up to Timberline Lodge. It was cloudy and rainy on this side of the mountain and expected it to be cold up top. 25mph up the six mile hill got us up to the top.
Poked around for a while and went on some short hikes.
It was 5:00 at this point and we were hungry again so we headed down towards Wrapitude in Welches. Please stop if you are in the area. Great food and good ciders.
From there is was the long drive back to our side of town. I know it was a great adventure had by the kids when even our 15 year old says "I don't want to go home yet, where else can we go?"
Till next time!

Thanks guys!
The yellow lenses are actually just yellow lens tint you can buy on ebay. I just cut out the shape and put them on like you would window tint. No problems after years of usage. I think it gives the front a better look and I do not notice any real performance drop in the lights.

Good to see you guys still enjoying the van with the kids.
We just got our bus this year and I have so many plans with it (mods and travels) but we're also in a phase where the family might grow in the near future.
Still a bit afraid of that topic, but I see it works.
We'll look at the pictures together this evening to motivate us to more weekend trips next season! |

We took a 400 mile road trip north to visit some old college friends for a Haunted Forest Party. Stopped by my parents house to get faces painted on the way. Later on it was fun watching the kids scream and cry and later say they weren't scared. "Best weekend ever" says the kids. Thanks Dixie!

Just a short update today. Decided to take the twins out to Hood River and try out the cool trails and stunts in Post Canyon. I used to ride up there a bunch and took my older daughter when she was 12 and we enjoyed it. We drove up to Family Man and let the girls go crazy on the beginner skinnies and trails. It was wet and muddy but didn't rain at all. The girls loved blasting through the mud.
First time on the wet bridges. A few fall offs made them pay attention
We went over to the small drops and they rolled a few but Megan's back brake broke so we moved on to some trail riding.
Rode back to the van and changed clothes to go into Hood River for a late lunch. Had a great burger and tots and wandered around the city for a bit.
On the way home I had some tired bikers.
Until next time.

Really like this thread!
How do you like that bike rack, could you share the make / model? |

Thanks for the feedback!
The bike rack is good. It is a Curt 2/4 bike that mounts in the receiver. I bought it from Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G4ATR54/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has worked well and I liked it because it can come apart and only take 2 bikes or you can put in the other piece and make it 4 bikes. A lot of times it is just me going and the 4 bike rack is so big. I didn't want to spend $4-500 on a Thule or Yakima and this seems to work well on my freeride style bike frame.
I did cut the rack down where it inserts into my receiver as it stuck out too far. When I built my bumper, I wanted the hitch mount flush so there is not a lot of room there.
