Hello,

New to the Things but not the Vdubs. Here is my Yellow 73 picked it up a couple weeks ago off the samba. Not to bad need alot of tlc. Solid pans hardly any rust. Not sure what is under all the paint Overall pretty solid.
Engine is leaky and tired, but I see an 1835 going in with dual carbs!
Already fixed some of the stuff.
Gas gauge
shocks
ball joint

shift rod.
More to come.

It looks like a great starting point! Cool Is there a little dent in the passenger side rear corner? What are your plans for it? Did it come with a top?

Yep has a little dent on rear corner.

My plan is too sort out all the little things that need to be done.
Gas tank clean and new hoses.
New clutch and gas cable.
New engine and tranny.
Install new top.

Drive it and have fun.

Sounds good. If you can, just ditch the pea-shooter exhaust. Wink

Pea shooter is out. I have an A1 sidewinder due in any day.

Still not sure if the spin on oil filter will fit with the sidewinder.

Getting ready to pull the tank and clean and install new steering damper, getting a little shimmy around 60 mph.

Very nice !! Archway is where I go to get just about anything I need for my Thing, as well as Type 1's I have owned in the past.

I am South County, perhaps later this summer or early fall we can have a St. Louis Kubel Treffen, such as a drive from St. Charles to Washington, MO . . .

I clean the gas tank today and it turned excellent. First time I have used acid to clean one and it works amazing. I used a bunch of washer for media to loosen up the rust and hit it with acid for 3 hours and it looks excellent.
I had always had a shop do mine in the past for over 100$ and I did this one for $5 for the acid.

I did have a questions about the paint.

The engine bay looks to be white and under the tank was white, would that be the orginal color? Would the VIN have the paint code or number?

I screwed up on this one. Ordered these wheels and they are to wide. I would have to buy fiber glass fenders to use them and then buy 2 of the 4" wide for the front and have staggared look. I really like the look and wheel but should have ordered the 4" wide one. Trying to sell hopefully they will go.

With all the rain here, I have had some garage time and pulled the engine and tranny in prep for rebuilt tranny and 1835.

Glad to have that nasty, oil dripping mess out.
Time to get dirty and clean up all the years of grime.

The answers are most likely and no, respectively. The no comes with a caveat in that the VIN sent to get a birth certificate will get a response that includes the original color.

Nice yellow, BTW.

Take a look at the wiring diagrams within the Technical section, http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiringthing.php.

I had the one for a 1973 enlarged and laminated by the Fedex Office store on South Lindbergh, did it all on-line, and it was ready for pick up in about three hours.

Had two made, and no need to worry about getting them dirty and greasy . . .

Excellent link and idea on the wire diagram. I been looking at the current flow one in my manual but its a little confusing.

I think I am getting it narrowed down, ready to get the engine back in.

Looking good!! A word of caution with those coil overs... The Thing does Not have proper weight to settle these.... I had a set, looking easy ground clearance, but it rode like total crap.... FYI...

Keep up the good work, and get her on the road!! Wink
