Is there a list of production year body numbers (or body stamps) of the numbers which are stamped into the body behind the spare wheel?
Mine is 5578.

They're listed with the VINs and other numbers, but unless yours is a partial number, there don't appear to be any 4 digit body numbers on the list:

Obviously no expert on this, but I notice that in another thread discussing Australian ovals, they're listing 4 digit numbers: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7697100#7697100

I wonder if it's a similar situation.

I'm sure someone will chime in with better info. Sorry I can't be of more help.

July 55.
VW restarted body numbering that month. I have no idea why.

It's not Australian, as that would have a MKA prefix.

Is that a reproduction tag? Shouldnt the tag be pop riveted in at each corner. Obviously the screws are wrong, but i think it should be riveted in all 4 corners eh?

Yes it is a reproduction tag, because the body was apparently resprayed some day. I think two VIN rivit holes were original for 1955, model 1956.
But only four digits for the body stamp I didn't see before.

The ID tag looks original, but repainted silver and screwed back in place.

It also appears this car once had an accessory windshield washer installed and the holes are from the bracket that held the glass bottle. Radio power packs were usually screwed to the bottom of the tray.

I should have explained better. Your chassis is a July 1955 chassis. They restarted body numbering in July 1955.
Look up the body numbers for July 1955 in here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php and you will see where your 4 digit number came from.

AHA now it is clear!

JULY 1955 body number:
from 000 001
to 008 056

They just didn't use the zero's.
Thanx a lot! Very Happy

Chassis is early August 1955, body is dated July.

Its because the bodies got their number when they were manufactured, chassi got numbered when the pan entered the production line.

They had to make some bodies so they had them ready for production. It was an all new body for the 56, because the old moulds where worn, and they prepared for making cars faster. They needed to simplify the production.

The bodies did not go on the assembly line in numbered order. My car is the #30 56 year model produced, it have a body # of around 1460, if I remember right.

Hi Gang,

I just stumbed on this discussion while researching my November 55 sedan.
There is a five digit, 77540, below the chassis plate. Is this the body number?

Could be if it's really an October 1955 car (1956 model year)
