That's a trip! I'm going to do what spot welds I can on the top (there is some rust damage on the top that won't work). On the sides I'm going to overlap for some additional support, and on the bottom I'm just going to butt the edges together and weld. I'm going to take my time on the bottom so I don't overheat it and warp it.
I'll continue to post pics as I make progress.
What is your plan? |

John - Absolutely. That was one of the deciding factors in including the entire 66 dash instead of only part of it. I saw that someone on here is making aftermarket trim pieces so once I get the paint done I'll get some of the trim. |

It's been a while but I finally got to start work on the paint. I didn't want to use chemicals to remove the paint and I read somewhere on here about someone using a heat gun and a razor scraper. So, $22 at Harbor Freight and 6 hours of relatively easy work and I'm making quick work of it.

Looks to be a bit of bondo work on there and I found some areas of rust under the bondo so it looks like I'll be sanding the rest of it down to the metal to see just how bad it is. |

Mine had a thick layer of spray filler all over it even where there was clean and straight metal underneath (as well as plenty of body filler hiding poor repairs in some areas). I think this is done by shoddy spray painters because it is less labour to do this than it is to block sand the whole car after priming like should be done. You may find that the brown is the original paint underneath the filler. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

it does.
Normally i would think that is shoddy work (and it may be in this case). I noticed recently on most of the car shows on TV (foose...) and they all seem to put down a layer of filler over the entire car. |
From what I have seen it appears to be pretty common now for shops to mud the entire car but usually to smooth out small dings, etc. - i.e. to slick the body. This is Ok if after the car is mudded what is left is just where the small dings were but yours does not seem to fit that type of work. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Poor quality body shops seem to like using lots of 'bodyman in a can' as no one apparently knows how to bodywork sheet metal these days...

The entire car was mudded. It looked flawless before I started getting into it. I wanted to make sure I repaired what metal I could and determine if there were any rusty areas under the current mud.........and there were.
The brown looks to be primer but I'll know a lot more once I start sanding it. |

It does not appear to be a thin layer either. A good body shop gets the metal to the point where it should not need more than a credit card thickness of filler. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

What if they stood the credit card on edge? |

Oh I am sure that would be fine as long as they feathered it into the bodywork! _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Well, I'm taking it down to bare metal (or close to it) and am going to fix all of the damage instead of covering it up with filler. Body comes off the chassis this weekend.......Let the fun begin!! |
