Fredrick Joel Ransbottom (aka Freddie Joel).
I received his name on a POW/MIA bracelet I received in 1971. In the 90's I was able to research him and his family over the internet.
In 2006 his remains were found and he was buried near his home in Edmund, Oklahoma.
Who do you remember? Please share their story. _________________ Glenn

I remember my Dad.
Putting a Genny. in my '71 Westy in the cold of winter in his Garage, late 1980's, the day his Mom passed, our kids were just toddlers then, and we needed to get back home to N.H. that night. We changed from our Funeral cloths to our garage grubs & swapped that genny out. He taught all 4 of his kids how to wrench on our cars.
Today I'll be heading to the Vt. Veterans cemetary to attend the service. _________________ Tom

My dad. He wouldn't know a VW engine was in the rear, or how to open a hood.
But he did his part in Europe in the Army Air Corps in WW2, never talked about it, not one word. Only when we saw his marker in the veteran's cemetery did we even know he was a sergeant. Service people, and the American population, all did their part. It wasn't all that long ago, a bunch of thugs/criminals got control, and many millions died. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Dad passed four years ago, but left a lifetime of service, love, guidance... and the sickness called Volkswagen ownership!
So much given for us...
Semper Fi, Dad. |

Thank you Glenn for this post. My father was an Army mess SGT. He passed during civilian life.
I spent 20+ years in the Calif Army National Guard, the majority as a "light fighter" in the 1-184INF Battalion. The Battalion's year deployment during OIF, 2004-2005, the loss was 17 troops, and 100 wounded.
Retired now, I still shed a tear at the National Anthem and during news events of the good things we have today. Hooah. |

My dad didn't serve in WWII in the armed forces. He was a machinist in the Brooklyn Navy yard working long hours to support the troops along side many others who served their country behind the lines. It was not that he didn't want to go. His bosses felt he and the men and women he worked with were more valuable here than there. My uncle who I was named after and never met was one of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Today we should honor all of those who contributed to the war effort. |

A San Bernardino (far inland Los Angeles for non-locals) public TV station ran Huell Howser segments all day long relating to the war efforts in California. Kaiser steel and shipworks, the B2 bomber, local air and sea battles (yes, on the California coast!)... and especially the survivors who told their stories, on the field of battle, in the factory, or at home. Sobering and reverent. |
