I got the paper too which had info on how to view the photos online. They do take a very high-res digital photo, it was ~5800 pixels wide! I guess they need that much resolution to be able to zoom in and get the license plate.

Hi all,
So while my generator is out and being rebuilt, I decided to take the time and rehab the generator pulley + shims + shim cap so it'll all look nice when I get the generator back. Probably most people wouldn't care especially since it's hidden under a cover most of the time but I looked at as a chance to practice some metal prep and painting skills which I don't really have much experience with. I also decided to do the same to the bracket that holds the emergency flasher switch to the dash. I received that from ataraxia long ago and just went ahead and installed it with the idea that I could always easily remove it later and clean it up. This seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Here's what I started with:

Nothing too bad, just everything sort of crusty.

Almost done with the pulley parts but here's how the bracket came out. Not perfect but pretty darn good in Rust-Oleum semi-gloss rattle-can black:

Turned out really nice.

Funny story: I totally forgot that I sold that bracket to you - three weeks ago, when I was collecting all of my stuff for a trip to drop off stuff to be powder coated, I couldn't find the bracket and spent the better part of 20 minutes looking for it. Then right as I was convincing myself that I'd completely lost it, I remembered where it went. d'oh!

The brake light switch saga continues! The first FTE switch I put in died within a month. Today the second one (also FTE) died - intermittent brake light activation, high pressure required, etc. Same symptoms.

I replaced it with an NOS Ate switch; we'll see how long that one lasts.

The second FTE switch lasted longer than the first time-wise but that's a little misleading as the car has been sitting since the end of January due to a bum generator. I think I put the 2nd FTE switch in at the end of October but I definitely did not put as many miles on in that time as I did on the first switch.

The original switch lasts 50 years, and you're lucky if any replacement lasts 50 days. Rolling Eyes

I should have specified that this is with DOT5. No one seems to know the mechanism for how/why DOT5 kills switches but it seems that it does.

Welp...went to adjust brakes today, gave the left front wheel a little check for play and found a clunk that shouldn't be there.

Looked into it and it appears that my left outer tie rod end is shot:

Clearly a new tie rod end and an alignment are in my future. Right side is fine and on the left side it's only the outer.

Anything special about the left side outer? Anybody have any issues with any particular brands of replacement parts out there now for this?

Knowing Keith, it should be a standard left outer tie rod, and not the left inner like sometimes happens when someone inexperienced replaces them.
I've had good luck with the Meyle brand tie rod ends, but I'll wait for others to chime in.

Never had any issues with Meyle front end parts.

If you make the overall tie rod assembly the exact same length as it is now you can just check tow with a tape measure and roll. Alignment really isn't a "periodic maintenance" thing, it's only really needed to compensate for worn and damaged parts. Since you're correcting a worn part, keeping the alignment exactly as it is while correcting the wear is where you want to be.

Hint: Pull the entire tie rod assembly and note the orientation of the ends, then use one of these to gauge the exact length of the original and assemble to fit:

Yes. I did

I bought a whole NOS assembly either here or eBay for like $90. Popped out the old, measured end to end, popped in the new. Of course this takes removal of the gas tank, draining the gas into your armpit, etc. but I was glad I did, I changed the fuel line underneith and added some considerable length to it to make jobs easier later

Eh? Confused

Even if you do remove the tank, on an early car it's easy without draining it... plug or cap the breather, clamp the fuel feed soft line, and out she comes... no draining needed.

Up on stands with one of those tie rod "popping" tools (not the fork) is easy without removing the tank, though.

IIRC the cap with a good seal comes through. A low tank level is also helpful.

When I put the whole front end under Meyer's Variant years ago I pulled the whole tank, fuel and all.

If you have a 2inch fuel line you can't exactly just pinch it and damn old man I thought your back was bad? That shite gets really heavy really quick

you must be thinking of your younger years with a good back and good fuel line and good seals. That shit is long gone - drain the damn tank and get that gas in your armpit. It's good for you ... LOL
