See what happens if you go back to your first post and hit "edit". Once upon a time the originator of the thread could change the post's title. Maybe now there is a limit in time. |

It's been a while since I updated this and figured I should. The bus is completely gutted and awaiting me to order the metal for it. I also ended up trading the unknown engine for a 1500cc engine that was rebuilt at some point as indicated by the stamping. The engine awaiting new pistons, which are back-ordered. While both await new goodies, I decided to start plugging away at the small stuff, kind of behind the scenes stuff that is not picture worthy. The front kick interior panels are in good shape and will be reused. Until the engine parts and metal come, I apologize for the boring pictures and behind the scene things. I guess its gotta be done sometime
Engine State: Had to clean off blue/gray paint that someone put on the block at one time. Still not perfect, but getting there.

Over the past month or so I put my main energy in to getting the engine back together. I decided to put bigger pistons into it (85.5mm) to take the engine from a 1500sp up to 1600sp. The only thing needed to be done is to do the timing. Below are a couple progress pics. It feels good to have a huge task completed!

If you're having any issues, Bob Cook of Cooker's Vdubs is in smiths burg right near you. Not sure if you've heard of Simple Transport but that is a show that I frequent right near you.

Thanks for the advice. I actually was just at his shop and went to simple transport last weekend. Are you somewhat local to me? |

UPDATE:
I got a little more motivation these past 2 weeks and decided to cut the cargo floor out. I unfortunately discovered that the front top hate section needs patched and replaced at the ends, and the 2nd to rear section (c pillar) needs replaced as well. Next time is to grind down the welds and get primer on it to prevent rust from spreading.

After completely taking everything off the bus, I am not getting ready to start doing the metal work. For convenience, I was able to find a rotisserie to make the process easier.
I plan to order the metal next month. There is more then enough to be done metal wise that does not require metal. Stay tuned to see pictures as I tear into it now. |

The first thing I decided to tackle was to fix the passenger side seat frames. Both seat frames were super pitted with holes through the frames and broken springs. I saw an idea on a previous thread and went with it. I used a combination of rivets, welds, and parts from other seat frames to fix these up. All in all I think it turned out well. I still need to hit the frame with a grinder to grind down the welds, then hit with a light skim coat of metal glaze to make it look real smooth.
What I started with.
What I ended with.
Frame itself.
I also decided to fill in the holes where the air scoops were. I used the trick of putting copper behind it to have the metal fill in nice. Another tedious thing down and done!
Other side complete, but no pictures, as it looks the same.
Thoughts are welcome! |

Nice repairs. All those jobs go in the savings account that is the bank of your bus. All it can do is get better and better. |

Have not gotten a chance to do much as the work schedule has been a little crazy. Was able to get pretty much all the metal though from Klassicfab. I got finished with the seat frames as seen below. I also got a chance to repair the side where the bus was shot with a shotgun. The next pictures I plan to post will be when the major welding and replacement metal goes in
Seat frames finished...still trying to find a middle seat somewhat decently priced

Finally got a chance to start on the major metal work. I began on replacing the whole front windshield as mine was beyond crusty. Although it looks decent in the first picture, it was beyond salvageable.
The first step was to remove the outer old metal. I had to meticulously cut the old metal out and use a 3-in-1 tool to break spot welds and remove the old metal around the front lips. I had to do this to both sides, which was a time consuming nightmare. With the metal removed, you can see the rust underneath the outer lip in the pictures.
Next I had to make a new replacement piece for the wiper opening due to mine being completely gone.
After that was fixed, I replaced the inner piece with some funky green.
Unfortunately after sandblasting the inner lips that on on the dash, I discovered that they both needed to be cut out and replaced due to the shocking resemblance to swiss cheese. I mocked up the outer panel to get an idea on the angle and put a few tacs in to hold in place.
Finally I mocked up the outer green piece. I needed to cut it just after the center on both sides due to fitment issues. I used the air punch to put holes in it for plug welding. To help it stay in place, I also used self tapping screws.
Then after it all the welding was done, I spent about 5 hours today grinding down the welds and finally cut the inner lip down. I left it a tad bigger for now to help the rubber fit better for the fronts. I still need to grinding down the welds for the inner lip. I figured that was enough for 2 days..
