So i've been on this site for about 9 years now. I never started a thread for the bus and figured it was time. I tried going back to one of my OG threads from back in the day but the pics are gone. When I was first joined my brother and I were kids 16 years old. No money but wanted a bus. Typical story we see on here all the time. My twin brother and I could barely drive a car let alone work on one. We had an old 60 bug hence the profile name. oops. We ditched the bug in college and obtained the slider our senior year of high school 9 years ago. We didn't do much to it besides get it mechanically going and take all the hippie shit out of it. You learn a lot being in a hobby for 9 years. You make mistakes...you learn a lot about tools, dealing with people, and problem solving. We made a lot of new friends up and down the sea coast and probably wouldn't still be in the hobby if everyone wasn't so cool and always willing to help.
When we first got the bus in 2005, we had no idea what we had and how cool it was.
2008 trailbash where it all started:
IN collegeI decided to finally paint over the red primer my senior year before moving for my new teaching job.
Changed many seals on this thing.
Finally found some real bus rims for cheap 2 years ago and put them on last spring. Looks like a real bus.
After nine years of neglect and finally making enough money to buy parts (all the advise it true, wait until your done with college then add 4 fours if you're a teacher!) I started to tackle some of the rust on the bus. Outriggers first.
just wanted to see what a test fit would look like after cutting and grinding for so long.
I have a lot of work to do and lots of cutting out old rust. I'll keep you updated. |

Nice bus. Gotta love the sliders. Its amazing how fast the time goes. I've had one of my buses for 9 years as well with little progress and just now started on it again. Look forward to seeing some progress shots. _________________ and take the kids for instance "Are we going in the Volkswagen bus?" and they say "Yay!" and clap their hands and if it's a glorious day you can slide the sunroof back and let a little of the glory in and all of a sudden, it stops looking funny.

Very cool bus. What are your plans to repair the frame in front of the beam mount? I can see it's bad in this pic

I don't want to harsh your buzz, but those are the wrong wheels for your bus. A '66 would have 14" wheels. They will, of course, still work fine, with a more varied selection of suitable tires. Good thing you got them for cheap, cuz 14" wheels are almost literally a dime a dozen. I have had several sets that I could not give away.
Keep up the good work! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I have been looking on here for that piece to buy but they seem hard to come by. I'll try patching it with new sheet metal first. There isn't anything that's it over the top gut wrenching on this bus. Just some nasty stuff. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Here are a couple pics of the frame rail area on my bus I replaced
You may want to brace at least the driver's side cab like this:
Stagger the cut on the inner and outter sections so they are not in line with each other for strength. I also used a notched cut and fit the rail together like a puzzle piece for extra strength. I have a pic of that somewhere. _________________ WANTED:

Clay, I'll let you know how my patch metal from home depot comes out. If its not lining up good or is too many pieces I'll give you a call. I appreciate your help. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Tom, Clay is hooking me up with the frame pieces. Slight fabrication on the outrigger section to be made with the seam. I will be up for cabin fever for sure. I've got some home brew for this years meet. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.
